Hello,
I had the rare opportunity to visit the "Lufthansa Technik", the repair shop in Frankfurt. Click on the pictures, it's worth is. This is the cosy little repair shop And this is what they repair here. Yes, they also fix the cracks on the wing root. The guy here is not a midget, the engines are huge. First Class. Emirates are actually better equipped. BAthroom in first. The cockpit. We spent some time here, the other team members were getting bored. I think if Arthur Hayley's "Airport" ever became true with me on board, I could bring here down safely now. The overhead panel. On all displays Airbus follows the "lights-off" philosophy. If something that should be switched on during normal flight operation is switched off, then an "off" light lights up. And vice-versa, so in this "all lights" test you see some ON and OFF lights. Once you have completed your pre-flight, all lights are off. On the left bottom screen next to the pedal you see a yellow x-hair cursor. This is being moved by the track-ball in the hump next to my knee. The displays can display all sorts of information, selected by the keys below and/or the cursor. ... Last edited by Gyro_Kai; 06-02-2012 at 02:16 PM. |

The view is daunting.
Please note, all doors for the undercarriage are closed, except for the absolute minimum, again an Airbus philosophy, reduces stow-away opportunities. For comparison: 747. Oh yes, not just any 747, it was actually the new 747-800. But we were not allowed inside. This is the cockpit of the 747-800 (incorrect, it is the 747-400), them guy seem to like brown. We even went up that secret narrow staircase in the back and checked if everything was ok back there ... Last edited by Gyro_Kai; 06-03-2012 at 03:10 AM. |

We also went to the engine repair job. Just no way to get it all into pictures.
Hope you enjoyed the excursion as much as I did. Kai. |

A380 burns fuel per passenger at a rate comparable to that of an economical family car. A380 carries 35 per cent more passengers than its competitor, it burns 12 per cent less fuel per seat -- reducing operating costs and minimising its effects on the environment at the same time through fewer emissions. Specifically this aircraft has a consumption of less than 3 litres per passenger per 100 kilometres. It also generates as little as 75 g of CO2 per passenger kilometre, knowing that the European car industry aims at 140 g of CO2 per km. That was in 2009. Today this is a little bit better.

Thanks for the pictures Kai.
Sorry but the 380 is Ugly. Lufthansa admitted as much in one of their inflight magazines when they were introducing it. Rick
