Default Rotors Over The Rockies Official Info

Rotors Over The Rockies - Updated June 6 @ 12:30am MDT

Updates - I've made what will be the last update to available instructor hours on the website. It looks as if there should be at least some time available each day with each instructor. This will also be the last update to this post.

We expect to two new Sport Pilot / Gyroplane add-ons (to private/Airplane certificate holders) by Friday!

NOTE: The PayPal button for hangar reservations in Western Rotorcraft is not working, but the one on the website works fine. You'll get a receipt by return e-mail, and we'll have a record of it here when you arrive.

Whirlybird Helicopters will be joining us on the Saturday morning invasion of the Logan fly-in breakfast!

KSL's latest forecast says we'll have great weather for flying and camping, but a variety of high temps. Bring clothing you can layer to ensure you're comfortable.

The Fifth Annual Rotors Over The Rockies is underway! The meet officially runs Thursday-thru-Saturday, June 7-9, but we have earlybirds on-site. There is no charge for admission, on-airport camping, exhibitors or car parking. Indoor overnight parking for rotorcraft (with two-bladed rotors) is available for a donation of $20 to URA covering Tuesday-thru-Saturday nights. Space is limited, so if you're sure you're coming, reserve in advance using a credit card at the event website.

The June issue of Western Rotorcraft includes a four-page event guide as a center section.

We'll have helicopter flight instruction, intro flights and scenic tours available from Whirlybird Helicopter. Whirlybird will have three machines on hand. Whirlybird's affiliated fixed-wing flight school, Lucky Duck Aviation, has a Cessna 172 available for airplane training and flight reviews. Airmotive Service, the FBO at Brigham City, also has airplanes available for rent and instruction including an Ercoupe C model, which can be flown by Sport Pilots, for just $86/hour.

URA will host a pancake breakfast Saturday morning for a $5 donation. We're also planning to dispatch a few gyros to "invade" a fly-in breakfast the same morning at Logan Airport, 17 nm to the north, to raise interest and get some of the fixed-wingers to fly down and check out ROTR. There will likely be a cross-country breakfast flight to The Auger Inn at Ogden, 21 nm south, on Friday morning. On Friday evening, we'll take a group to the Maddox Family Drive-In, a classic local diner with great food.

Dennis Dubois has loaned us his nice hydraulic thrust scale, and we'll have a designated area and time for gyroplane thrust tests on Friday afternoon.

Bring sunscreen! The extra UV reaching the earth's surface at 4,000' MSL elevation can be deceiving. Also bring a lawn chair, your camera and some lip balm, and be sure to stay hydrated.

Contact info@utahrotorcraft.org with any last minute questions, and be sure to include a phone number where we can reach you. We'll see you at the Crossroads of the West!

Default I hope to be there!

My current plan is to drive up on Wednesday and back home Sunday.

Ed has to work and Bob is visiting a doctor so I will be solo.

If anyone wants to join me just send me a private message.

I will probably have a small rental car and stay in a motel.

Thank you, Vance

Cool This one I'll enjoy vicariously.......

The next I WILL BE THERE!!!
Too busy to be envious .... OZ'rora is getting a thorough going over to find anything that's come loose in the first 5 hours of operation. Polishing up, rewiring radio with shielded wire .... chasing out the bugs .... then out to the airport to await those rare no/low wind days for balancing workouts!

Then there is 300 ac of grass hay to be baled .... then MENTONE!!!!

Have fun all, be safe and punch a few air-holes for me!!!

Glen,

I am so happy to hear that you will be able to fly your new machine this year at ROTR. It was looking a little scary there for a while, but it is obvious that you have a burning desire and that is able to overcome all kinds of challenges. I can't think of a person that deserves it more. As Jim wouls say, "Goodonya"!!!

OK, I have been planing the trip now for the last 3 to 4 months. Looking so forword to talking with all of you, and getting a little air time. I was thinking it might be great fun just to camp out and and soak in the whole event. Well my 97 year old grandmother has taken a turn for the worst, She is a little better today, but not a lot of hope. Only time will tell. I have not canceled my trip yet. Wish me some good luck, I could use it.

Ben,
We wish you luck and hope you are able to make the trip. Since you are only one State away from us we would really like to get to know you better (neighbor!). There is a large grass field available for campers or trailers and if you were thinking of camping in a tent, I would suggest you plan on joining us inside the hangar. We have a large area indoors available and bathrooms and running water. (That's pretty easy camping)

Are you planning to bring your RAF down with you? We would love to see it even if it isn't ready to fly yet. Trailer it down and share it with everyone! We really hope you are able to make it, this Event only happens once a year and there isn't another Event this close to you, so don't miss it if yhou can possibly make it. Also having two Gyro CFI's available is unheard of in this part of the country so schedule some time with both before it is all booked up. It won't get any closer or more convenient than this!!!

A few additional training hours have opened up, and more still could if local students complete training with CFI Mike Burton before the ROTR begins. See the latest availability and follow updates here.

The latest extended forecast from KSL now covers past the end of the event. Record heat breaks Tuesday, winds back to normal by Wednesday, and let the flying commence!
