Billy's machine is very near completion. Jeff Tipton welded up the dynofocal mount for the engine and Billy is "off to the races." It won't be long now.

I suspect this question may simply show my ignorance, but not having spent much time around a Parson's Trainer I simply don't know that much about them. Looking at these pictures made me wonder why the cyclic control for the instructors position sticks out so far to the side. Is that normal? and Why is it our so far? Does it need to be that far away from the seat to allow sufficient cyclic movement to the left? (curious minds want to know)

I noticed that but just assumed it wasn't hooked up to the controls yet.

Rear seat position is a side stick control, making it easier to enter and leave the rear seat position. The head has not been fitted yet so the control linkages are not set yet.

Engine mount looks scarey. Not nearly enough lateral support.
The two tubes that are most outboard, running downhill, don't have a wide enough purchase, and their lateral support was compromised by running downhill at a great angle. Ever watch a Lycoming at full throttle with the brakes on?

Thanks Jon for posting these pics for me,
the mount is not complete yet, it will get more support in the Lateral and also in the rear just under the prop end. I just have to make it where it is shock mounted.I don't want it transferring vibes into the airframe. Well I got lots more to do so I better get back to it. A big shout out to Jeff, Thanks a bunch and I will see ya soon for some more wielding, It's going to need it.

Once ya think you have a safe mount glued up,
secure the main wheels real good with straps on a trailer. Then remove the prop and bolt an 8 foot 2x6 in its place. Get on the end of the 2x6 and start pulling back and forth. Might be surprised. Over n out.

I used the same design that Steve Craft used on his Parsons 2 with a Lycoming, Still flying great so far,Not sure how many hr's he's got on it. I got the dynofocal ring from Aircraft spruce and the lord mounts to match, I called the people up that makes the rings for A/S and ask what size tubing to use with the mount to be safe and even gave them the application it was to be used on(my set up) and they sent me the tubing needed for the job, The mount is built strong and should not have any problems with it AFTER IT IS FINISHED. (key words peps) Yes if all goes well it will make it to Menton,, Thanks Guy's for all your input, good and bad.

With a Bensen-type rigid axle and a heavy engine, it's pretty normal to run diagonal braces down from the rear-underside of the engine to the axle tubes, about a foot out from the keel. If you don't, the engine will try to torque your mast off when you land in a crab. It might succeed at that.
I bet Billy knows all about this. I didn't use such diagonal down-braces on my first version of a VW-Bensen setup. The sway of the engine when you pushed on the prop was really scary. I put braces on it after a session or two of taxi-testing. The mount at the back of the engine should be a soft shock mount, though (lots of rubber). The engine needs to be able to move normally in its Dynafocal ring. |
