Texas Rotorcraft Association (TRA) meeting Saturday, May 26, 2012

The Texas Rotorcraft Association (TRA) meets this Saturday at the Olney, Texas, airport. The date is Saturday, May 26, 2012. The time is as soon as you can get there. Folks generally start arriving about ten o’clock. Lunch is at noon and we’ll have a speaker right after lunch. Flying is all day long.

H-P Schule is the guest speaker. He’ll be talking about pilot training at Sheppard Air Force base. H-P has lots of instructor experience, which would benefit a bunch of us, no matter what kind of aircraft we fly. One of H-P’s favorite expressions is "Don't let your aircraft get anywhere your brain hasn't been 3 minutes earlier." The astute reader will likely notice that this expression is different from “Where am I, and how did I get here?”, a question I often ask myself.

If you want a demonstration ride or training in a gryoplane, you’ll be at the right place this Saturday. Henry Foster, our resident gyroplane CFI, will be there and so will Desmon Butts, a CFI from Tom Ball. Henry has a modified RAF with an enclosed cockpit and side-by-side seating. Desmon has an MTO Sport with an open cockpit and tandem seating. Both Henry and Desmon will try to accommodate anyone who wants to fly, but you may want to contact them before the meeting.

FYI: Desmon will be at the Bridgeport airport for a few days prior to the meeting at Olney on Saturday.

If the prospect of flying isn’t enough by itself to get you to the meeting, here’s an opportunity I know you can’t pass up: roasted feral hog. If you’ve never experienced this taste thrill, this is your chance. Randall and Lora Weems are bringing an 80-pounder roasted with hot coals buried in the ground. (Some of you may be familiar with this roasting technique; it’s one employed by the Internal Revenue Service during an audit.)

Feral hog is the main course. Think about what would go good with roasted feral hog -- and bring enough of that dish to share. The hangar has an oven to warm things and a refrigerator to keep things cool. Please let me know what you’re bringing. My email address is below. Thanks.

Paula Fair has volunteered to bring potato salad, and we’ll have drinks there.

As an aside, I suggested bringing candied turnips, but Bob O’Dell discouraged me from doing that by breaking my arm. When I suggested poke salad au grautin, he broke my other arm.
