well there are no gyro cfi's near the hayward california area so i got in touch with a helicopter cfi.
what a ride!!!!!!! i cant even describe the excitement and thrill i had today!!!!!!! i have 9 hours in an mto sport under desmon butts and i know that training does not directly translate over to helicopter training but between you and me it made many things easier. the understaning of control inputs helped out greatly during straight and level flight. hovering......well.....that will take a littel more time.....heh heh heh anyways, i had a blast and i am due to head back for my next hour in two weeks. i can't wait!!! jeb ps full auto down=awsome!!! |

Good for you Jeb
As soon as your brain will differentiate between left turn from the left swing the hovering will become very easy. Our vestibular system is not the most precise and it makes it a bit harder for us humans . In the R22 you have the T bar so I can't suggest to rest your forearm on your thigh but usually it helps as it does restrict the amount of movement and therefore reduces the over controlling. Either way good luck and don't forget to enjoy it!

I'm in San Jose, and fly the A&S 18A out of E16 (South County), if you'd like a ride in a certified gyro sometime.

Jeb- Actually I feel light after a flight. I have noticed that I can savor my last flight for the longest time before I feel a need to go burn more kerosene. My wife Barbara has noticed a difference in my frequency of flying. If I have flown within a few days, I am content as heck and don't need to get into the air so soon. My senses are still feeding back my memories of my last flight. The only exception to this was when I was doing my data collecting runs for my fairings. Now that was work, repetitive flying, and not near as memorable. But my last flight was Saturday and I will savor that flight most of the week. I was done with my flight testing, and simply out enjoying my Turbinator as before. Yesterday was an extremely beautiful day to fly, but I was still savoring the flight on Saturday. Its just how I am wired. Saves on fuel too! Stan

There's a big long pond next to the runway that I thought might be for seaplanes until I saw waterskiers zipping around it.

stan- thanks!! i never really thought i was going to get in a helicopter and reading your posts about the helicycle have stuck with me!!
Gabor-im not to worried about the hovering bit. it was scary fun. when i got done with my first hour in a gyro i was in information overload. i thought i would be yesterday, after being in the r22 and the added controls but other than the hover portion i got out feeling very positive about the whole thing. arnie-thank you and your welcome. im a 16 yr old trapped in a 36 year old body im glad you got a laugh!!! question: do you feel heavy after flying? i do for a little while after i get out. gyro and helicopter jeb |

Great job.. There is almost no better feeling to lifting straight up off the ground and knowing "you're in control of it". Just amazing.. Enjoy it and keep us posted.
