Default EJ22 radiator

I know this topic was covered before & I tried a search for this question but didn't have much luck. So I'll ask again.

I would like a larger radiator on my EJ22 for better cooling.
What type auto radiator comes from RAF?
What other type auto radiators could be used?

RAF ones were specially built.

Rudy, down here we mostly use Nissan Pulsar alloy radiators on all our ej 22's.

And what do you use on a EJ-25 Paul?

Mr. Bruty,
The Pulsar radiator is it close to the radiator used by RAF?
Are any special modifications needed or will it mount in the same fashion?

Also what radiator do you use with the EJ25?

Here's an idea you might consider.
Take your present radiator to a shop. Have them take off the top and put a block in the middle of the top and then reweld it on. Now block of the bottom outlet and make another out let on the top above where the old out let was. Now the water has to go in the radiator, down one half and then up the other half. This will give you better cooling, as now the water is forced to go through the whole radiator. Had it on mine and it worked great, I maintained 180 at cruise and never reached 200 full throttle climbing out. Even in the Florida summer heat.

I heard something like that before, so I called the RAF people today.
Peter told me they started installing 1 plate in the top header about 1/3 of the way & 1 in the bottom header 2/3 of the way to cause a 3 pass flow of the water. He said this caused the water to run about 25 degrees cooler.

I'll talk to the local radiator shop about this & check on locating a Pulsar radiator. I'll see which option is better.

Rudy,

I mounted a Nissan Pulsar radiator on my RAF, with a 2.2. It weighs in at 9 pounds.

It took a totally different method to mount it. Can't tell you how well it works yet, haven't done any taxiing or flying yet. Just ran it on the ground doing a first time radiator fill. It was a 90 degree plus day, and the temps were running close to 220 at full throttle(tied down).

Need to check my EIS against another temp gauge first. Also, expect the temps to go down while taxiing and flying.

Hope this helps.

At the monet I am using the same radiator with the ej-25. I will take some pics in a few days when I get the chance.

The Nissan Pulsar radiator would be 100% more efficient than the RAF one.

Aussie Paul.

Hi Guys,

While we're on the subject of radiators, when an engine drop mod is done, if the radiator was vertical and below the engine, can it be moved back to between the prop and the then-lower engine, or is a dropped-tail boom/keel mod required, or, can/should it be tilted with the top forward, as I've seen in some photos?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Thanks, and All the Best,
Jim

Took my radiator to the local radiator shop today.
The guy said he can modify it to make it a 3 pass unit, while he rods it out.
I should get it back by the weekend, he was very busy & said he will work on it himself.

Got my radiator back today from the shop, cost me $75 to open it for cleaning & installing the baffles.
Won't install it until next week, working nights until Monday.

I want to replace the thermostat, looked at all the local part houses & they only offer the 170 degree. I think someone told me that I need a 190 degree. Anyone know or does that only apply to the fuel injected engines with computers.
