Default Canadain gyros

I'm interested in getting more info on gyros and have a few questions. What type of license do you require to operate one in canada? How much does the training cost? What kind of costs are there associated with gyros other than the everyday maintanace costs? Thanks.

Default Training in Canada?

Does anyone know of any schools or individual instructors in Western Canada (ideally Alberta) or even the Pacific Northwest or Midwestern United States offering gyroplane pilot training? There's one in BC I know of with two machines, but they are having trouble with their insurance and are not offering training as of yet. Also, if there are any suggestions on cheap and relaible training gyros (or single seat time-builders, for once the training is completed) I would sure like to hear your opinion. Cheers!

Craig.

Craig,

I believe the guys at GBA Gyroplanes of Seattle, an AAI SparrowHawk dealer, have training up and running in an AAI-modified RAF 2000. If not, they're getting close. Call Randy Coplen at (206) 947-4900. Web: http://www.gbagyro-sea.com/

Sport Copter in Scappoose, Oregon has an open-frame tandem machine based on the Vortex single-place, powered by an NSI / Subaru 2.2 with variable-pitch prop, and two CFIs, one with weekday availability. I'm told they're booked pretty thick, but worth a try: (503) 543-7000. Web: http://www.sportcopter.com

There is word that a flying club will be based at Scappoose, allowing students to buy into a group owning a Sport Copter Vortex single-place for use in satisfying solo requirements for the Private R/G certificate. I'm not sure how soon, or whether it would be open to foreign students, but worth asking if you call.

It's getting into a beautiful time of year to fly in the Pacific Northwest!
