Mike spiralled down, too low, made a bounced recovery, got it a little sideways and didn't think he could stop before the ditch (you can't see it) he tried to jump the ditch but the other bank was steeper.

Mike was a clever guy.When the police and fire wanted to make a big deal of the wreck, he told them the gyro was "remote controlled" and no one was on board. They bought his story for a day. The next day a detective came to my house and wanted access to the club's hangar to see the "radio controlled" gyro. I told him it was gone. Back to Mike's farm in Indiana. The newspapers had a ball with the story and kept it alive for days.
Sadly, Mike died 2 years later in the crash of his friends Marchetti Avenger.

Those were great shots. Your chapter does a good job of PR for the greater
Chicago area. I would say that Si s daughter should be out of high school and in college now. The accident was sort of what not to do. It looked like he was behind the power curve. Then he added power too. His take off was a little unusual also. What type of engine did he have on his gyro? It seemed a little under powered.

I really enjoyed the vids Tom. Thanks for continuing to share your wealth of videos. Yes being a gyro pilot can be glamourous, exciting, and safe.

Tom: I havent been thanking you for these videos you have been so kindly uploading. Mainly because I am still on dial up and cant view them

I am going to go hi-speed internet as soon as I get my "missions" flown in my SparrowHawk. Trouble is....my "missions" list keeps growing.


When I do get hi-speed..my new camera will be able to post inflight movies here. Just warning everyone.

I forgot that quite a few folks still have dial up. You'll never go back, trust me.

What we need is for Ralph Taggart to put the plans out there for his gyro mounted "real time" television broadcasting system. Why watch movies when we can watch real time gyro flying on TV :-)

If I remember correctly, Ralph used to broadcast (narrowcast?) the TV signal from his 'bee to his home and record his flights via VCR.

I think Ralph "the wizard of Menlo Park" used to bounce some signals off the moon as well. A long stretch from his field as a Paleobotanist (sp?)
