The FAR,s say the "N" number should be 6 inches tall.
I believe for an experimental or maybe it's for rotorcraft only. They only have to be 4" tall.
Tom Milton (DAR) did the airworthiness on my gyro and said that was all I needed.
I don't have the Far's in front of me right now. But It probably reads for "Aircraft" not Rotorcraft.
