it's A starter Bendix just like the one on you're car when the shaft turns inside the Bendix it's made like a screw and the gear kicks out.

Greg, I am going to build a pre-rotor with a goped engine. I have been looking at the one you made and understand most of what you did. The only thing I don't understand is about the top where the shaft connects to the ring gear. If I heard right on your vidio you say that when the power is shut down the gear drops down. If so what pops it up to start the blades to start rotate?
