Hi Tony, would I be right in guessing that you are, or are planning to train yourself to
    fly a gyro?
If so, I can give a certain amount of guidance, having trained myself(by the Bensen method) to fly my own machine.
It can be done, and safely, but only by the exercise of a good bit of patience, perseverance, and self-discipline.
If I have guessed wrong, no worries.
Your 'on the step' analogy is not correct, but I can see why you might think that.
It is more complex than that, which is why rotor handling on takeoff is so important.
It's not difficult, but IS a technique to be learned.

Not hardly a soul doing anything with the EA-81 any more. Here are the rules to make the EA-81 a good choice. Pilot wt 180, [less is better]. Empty weight 350, [less is better]. Prop, Warp 60" set at 6* on tips. Prop RPM 2600 climb, 2200 cruse. Rotor, 24" Rotordyne or Skywheels or Extruded [[8 H -12] rotor. No other rotor I have tried will give good climb. The secret to marginal power is a good rotor. Stock carb and manifold, holly 1920, or Pinto holly 2 barrel progressive work okay. I like the Pre 1980 1700 cc point dist. for ignition, stock elec. ign do not hot spark enough for hand prop. [Con't below].

In thousands of hours on my own 3 engines, only a .67 cent expansion freeze out plug one time has been my only expense. Near 30 intallations over the last 20+ years, with a 2 year guarantee, never had to replace anything for all those men. A most perfect engine has never been, till the 912, but that baby is above our pay grade. No prop hubs left anywhere. Herman said he got Ora's last one...

Thanks Tony, for getting us started with the EA-81 back in the late 80's.
With your prop hub, 1920 Holly Adapter, Milled beautiful housing cover, etc.
Still have 7 housing covers yet. Sold one last month. Have 5 engs. left too.

    Tony,

Thanks for the payment. I sent the package today by Parcel Post Priorty Mail. Thanks for including money for shipping. It came out almost even. You should have the package in 2-3 days.

I came up with an idea a couple of years ago about taking an Affordaplane fuselage and adapting a rotary wing to it. It would be a quick build because the fuselage bolts together. It will give you the benfits of a tractor design and be easy to build. Here is the Affordaplane website. http://www.affordaplane.com/ I have a friend who has a layout and started building the fuselage last fall. He has built a Little Wing and started to fly it, unfortunely he ground looped last year. What do you think about the Afford-a-gyro concept?
