I haven't been on Homer Bells website for a few months until just an hour ago. He has a lot of Helicycles, Rotorways, and a few Scorpions advertised through him.

He has people advertising 12 Helicycles flying or still in kits for sale. Everyone one of the kits have recently sold, and there are only 2 Helicycles left for sale, one of them for $78,000.

Mine is not for sale, but I have had some very tempting offers. Its comforting to know should I ever lose my medical.

I had a visitor in my shop yesterday wanting to see mine. He lives close by and inquired how much maintenance my helicopter needs. I just said, "knocking on wood, but I will soon will be having my 3rd anniversary of flying mine, and it has required the least maintenance by far of any of the other four gyros I have flown". It is constantly looked over trying to find "something" to adjust,....but other than tighten my drive belts once.....a 10 minute job,......loosen a slightly sticking elastomeric bearing twice......about a 2 hour job,.......its just grease it every 5 hours, replace the tail rotor gearbox oil ....
.......and it just keeps running like a John Deere tractor.

I have started it over 250 times, and each start was successful and I accomplished my flights as expected. I did early in my Helicycle career have those 2 flameouts which ended up in autos to the ground. Both times I started the turbine back up and flew it back home. Thanks to Doug Schwocherts expert over the phone consultation, and I learned that the flameouts were nothing but
needing a turn of the low idle stop screw to keep enough fuel flowing to the idled turbine during a high power to low power application of the collective.

I would love to be able to thank B.J. Schramm for designing such a dependable helicopter that requires minimal maintenance

I think the reason they sell out on their build runs, and Homers listings selling so well is the word us getting out.

I have slowed up a lot with my video and picture taking as it gets to be old news......but my flights just keep making me realize B.J. got the Helicycle design
the best of his works.

Greetings everyone!

I am thinking of getting into gyros, but need some information before getting started. I have been reading many things on here and other sites the last few weeks but still confused about some things, mostly flying in wind.

Let me tell you a little about myself first. I have a sport pilot with PPC endorsement and have been flying them for 5 years now. I farm in SW Kansas and fly from my own backyard pasture right now. I am getting so tired of the wind here the last few years that I am ready to give up on the PPC. I am lucky if I can fly twice a month anymore and that’s flying every chance the wind/weather allows. I have taken an intro flight with a CFI in a gyro a few weeks ago and have talked briefly to another CFI about gyros.

Now my question. They both left me with the impression that they handle wind very well and is not normally an issue for them. After reading some posts on here I read little comments from pilots that confuse me. Several have said something to the affect “looks like the wind should go down this evening and be flyable”. This sounds more like a comment from a PPCer. I really don’t think they are talking about the wind blowing extreme at the time but just their normal daily wind. Also another pilot in training working on their solo flights said it was to windy to fly (10-12 mph I believe) so they were just working on ground handling. I realize beginner pilots should stay out of higher winds but I was under the impression that 10-12 mph would be a non event in a gyro. (not crosswind of course) and would have even been great training experience.

What kind of winds do you experienced gyro pilots fly in and don’t even think about the wind. As I am typing this I am watching my weather computer here at my farm. The wind is averaging 21 mph gusting to 28 sometimes. That is not unusual at all for here anymore and this is what I thought experienced gyro’ers could handle without problems.

Same goes with the time of day. The comments about maybe “this evening” or “in the morning” confuse me. I thought you could fly these pretty much all day. I know the air gets rougher during the day but is that a big safety issue as it is in a PPC.

I want a flying machine that I can pull out of my shed 300 days out of the year and fly any time of day as long as the weather is not extreme and wind excess of 30 instead of the 20 days a year I might get with my PPC. Not saying I am going to fly 300 days, but I want the option to fly when I want instead of when the weather lets me. I thought the gyro might be that machine. Am I completely wrong or maybe at least close?

In case it makes a difference I am thinking about a single seater 912 size machine for the first few years then maybe 2 seater later.

Thanks!!

Here in PA we pay school tax based on the value of our property.( we also have other taxes, but the school tax that comes in July, are the worst )

We would like to have that changed to a 1% increase in sales tax , to serve the same purpose.

Everyone loves the idea but it just can't get done. I am not really sure who even opposes it & why.
How are your school taxes calculated in your state ?

I am baffled. Please help me understand why American gyros have CW rotating props on them, when this ADDS to the unbalancing forces acting on the aircraft of disproportionate lift characteristics induced by right-advancing, left retreating blades on gyrocopters?

Why are we all running CW props?

It makes no sense at all. CW pusher props torque the gyro to the right - the same direction that the rotor disk favors. Does it not make sense to reverse the prop and make it CCW, thus torque rolling the airframe LEFT, in opposition to the disk lift asymmetry???

I thought I was experiencing nothing but torque roll when I noticed I needed to push my stick right to keep it flying "flat" at cruise. But when I reduced power, I still had to input noticeable right stick, so I know that the disk is at work pulling the airframe up on the right side, as well as the reverse torque roll factor.

I'm changing directions. Anyone want to buy a 68", 3-blade Warp Drive prop?
