Just kickin' some ideas around. Anyone ever mount an electric pre-rotator on a Dominator before?

Barry,
If you want a good prerotator on your machine, go with the Wunderlich setup like Ernie uses with the 12" drive plate in front of the prop. You'll get well over 200 RRPM easily.
And it'll be lighter than an electric setup.

He is a bonehead.... To be different he doesn't want to use that set up!!! I tried my best to tell him that would be the best option. :argue: Problem is he is using a Hirth and Ernie most likely doesn't have the parts to mount the lower unit to the gearbox like he does with the Rotax B type gearbox.
I suggested that if it is a choice between normal Wunderlich prerotator and electric, that I would be tempted to go electric as it is so simple and cheap and gets the blades going plenty fast enough for most runways, even short ones. :humble:

First of all Ronny, whenever someone doesn't agree with you..they are bone heads! Lets put our IQ's together and see who wins you putz!
I'm just trying to get a pre-rotator on it before ROC cause the wunderlich set up might not be done in time! (some of us have families with responsibilities that we take seriously and don't have alot of time to spend at the airport like you do each weekend)
Let me build it..OK?
I still love ya but like MY kids, I should give you a smack in the forehead once in awhile!
Love, hugs and stuff!

I was thinking the same thing Scott. There are a few threads where the frazzled minds are controlling the keyboard. :argue:
Are you sure it's not winter up there, and some little :angel:s need some sun to get rid of the winter blues?

Anyone know what make/model starter can be used as a pre-otator for the dominator ring gear?
Wiring schematic for a sift start?
Thanks,

Barry,
It's a 108 tooth ring gear, which I believe originally came off an outboard. Dad gets them from Dick Wanderlick. I think others that have gomne with an electric prerotator have had to change the ring gear to match the starter. I hope this helps good luck.

Toyota Corolla starter is the one I think you need, why not go to autozone and get one and see if it meshes with the ring gear, and if not just return it for a full refund!

You can have the bendix gear changed as well. We use the Corolla/Camry east west engine starters and ring gears. The teeth count is almost the same as the Wunderlic but the teeth pitch is different. I think the starters come with either 9 or 11 teeth on the ring gear.
My gut feeling says that you would use the 11 teeth starter on the smaller Wunderlic ring gear, BUT I am probably wrong. Oops sorry, incorrect, I am never wrong!!

I'll ask this question here --what type/size battery do you use with an electric prerotator :noidea:

Riding lawnmower battery worked for me.... only cost 20 bucks....

I use the $ 14 Garden Tractor battery in my gyro now --I guess for this one I'll step up to the $20 one

went to NAPA...guess how many different starters there are for an 89 toyota corolla???? 3! I picked one and it doesn't look like a match! Back to the drawing board!

MIke, Is the tooth count on the Dominator ring gear really 108?
Thanks,

Barry, only four bolts hold the rotorhead on. Remove them and take rotorhead to Autozone, makes life easier!!!

Barry,
Yes, I think it is 108.

If you've got the ring gear why don't you count them? :)

If the Starter you need is an 11 tooth, I can give you the exact starter.

The ring gear does infact have 108 teeth! (I counted them wuth the help of a calculator!) How do I know if I need an 11 tooth starter?????????????
Help! (if I don't get this figured out, Ron's arms are going to be sore pre-rotating me all the time!)
Oh yea......Hirth started on the first pull baby!!!!!

Since you know Barry's ex-GyroBee so well, is there an easy way to get rid of all the weight associated with the electric prerotator on this Rotax 503 powered machine and install the Wunderlich on it? Or would you just forget it and go with what's already on the machine?
Thanks, -=Ed=-

Ed, I am not sure there would be much of a weight savings ditching the electric and going with the other style.
You could install a much smaller and lighter battery. The one on it now is overkill - typical of ole Barry! :)
