Thanks guys. Steve did a great job pushing me out of the nest. The KB (KB-2) flies great, although I really don't have much to compare it to. It was a rush! It flies like a rocket! Here's a couple photos of the crow hops leading up to the flight around the airport. One of Steve's other students stopped by for a visit as we were preparing for my flight so he manned a camcorder and we got it on video. Can't wait for Bensen Days 07!
Here's a link to the video. Thanks Ernesto (Steve's student, not the storm.)

When you posted last week that you were going to be spending the long weekend with Steve M., I was really hoping this was going to be IT! I have been silently pulling for you all this time.
Now your life will never be the same again! Be careful, use your good judgment and ENJOY!:D :D :D

Way to go Tim! Congrats, you have done well, Just remember to listen to Steve's voice in your head when you fly. I know that for the first few hours of flight time after my first solo I could hear, Power, pedal, balance every time I would start down the runway.
You should be proud.

Congratulations Tim, old buddy. I recognize that stiff back, head straight forward, and the firm grip. Whew! I remember that day I soloed. I can’t compare this feeling to anything else that I have ever done. What a rush!:D
Put it there tim....I can still feel the rush:D

Tim,
I spoke to Scott last night right after you got off the phone with him so he told me. I'm so excited for you. It's so great to see the perseverence pay off. There's just nothing like the first time.

Tim,
It only gets better. :) The more you fly, the less "fear of flying", and more FUN.
Just don't get too relaxed then and stuff-up, as Birdy would say.
Keep it safe. We'll fly together some time. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

Thanks guys. I still plan on making the videos. Now I've got a flying camera platform to mount a camera on.
Shawn, I got the helmet 3 or 4 years ago to wear when I flew with my friend in his UL. I was planning ahead for the gyro also.
I posted the video on youtube. Here's the link.

Tim!!! Congrats on your solo achievement!. I watched your video and it sure took me back to the terror and exhilaration of my first solo in a gyro. After the flight and the adrenilin wears off and the stress back pain sets in and then wears off, you then say to yourself" What was I waiting for?"Fly safe.

Animal, It took me right around 10 hours of duel flying and about 5 hours worth of ground work. Flying didn't make me nervous, landing did. I know I have a lot of work to do to smooth up the landings. I have had a little stick time in my friends ultralight and every time I went for rides at Bensen Days I'd get to fly a little so I feel more comfortable once I'm in the air.
Thom,
Yeah, when I started ballooning up that last time I gave it a little throttle to smooth out the last little bit. I feel more comfortable with all the controls with each new time I'm in the seat.

This is great news and many congratulations Tim !!!
Do not let any folks here bring you down. The landings are as landings do, require time to perfect and even when you get "good" there will be times when you ask yourself what the heck happened. The more you do it the better you get.
That mac sounded strong and well tunned. I am impressed and elated that you are now a member of the flying fools that proudly proclaim are gyro pilots !
Just dont get cocky too early and know that there will be a time, a gust or a situation that will require you to fire up the gray matter and do the right thing.
Leave the photos for after the 25-30 hour mark. Until everything comes second nature dont fumble with a camera.
Great job on the camera work for your once in a lifetime moment. at least you got it for the memories... This October will be 2 years since I solo'd . Time does fly.

I am sitting here grinning watching that Mac purr around the field.Wow, Wow , Wow. Everyone who has been there was with you on that video. Thanks for bringing it all back to us.
Man theres nothing like those gyros climbing, banking, descending, ascending.
How about the smell of the 100ll in the Mac. Man what a blast you had.
Who was that well dressed gentleman that was you wingman?? He is a handsome fellow but he looks as though he is suffering from "mudbug withdrawal". There is a flyin at Rayville this week. I hope you can make it.

Tim,
good for you, I wondered why I could not get to the Forum last night and now I know. All the guy's had the system cloged up sending you congratulations, which are deserved.
I am still trying, but have things that I have got to do before I can continue. Seeing your flight gives me something to look foward to.

Charlie,
You'll get there. Do whatever it takes to keep the dream alive. This was a long time coming for me. I went for my first gyro ride at Sun-n-Fun back in 2000 with Rusty Nance. I was hooked at once. At the time my daughters were in college and they both got married as soon as they graduated ($$!!). I started going to Bensen Days and may have only missed one year. I went for rides every time I went to Bensen Days. I started videotaping at Bensen Days so I could take the footage home and watch it to keep me pumped. I also kept following gyros on the internet. I didn't know about the old forum but when I found this one it was great (Thanks Todd!). Finally last year I found my KB-2 at an entry level price. It was a fixer upper and I made changes and improvements to it as I went along. I really wanted to get in the air last year but the hurricanes interupted those plans. I was sent out of town for my job for 10 weeks so that pretty much pushed my flying back. This year was the year! I want to thank Todd for this forum and all the guys who've given me advice on my machine. And a BIG thank you to Steve McGowan! For you guys out there still dreaming of flying, keep your dreams alive and keep working towards them even if it seems like you're not making any progress at times.

Congratulations Tim! I've been waiting patiently for you to succeed and you've done it well. Now lets get out there and fly our machines around the Gulf Coast and make the ground people go, "Hmmmm", "Wowwww". Bye the way, from that video it looks like I might have a hard time keeping up with you in my SportCopter, I hope you've mastered your throttle control. You do know that there's a position between IDLE and MAX right? Ok, great! So let's get together ASAP. Congratulations!

Blake,
Actually I never had it wide open. Steve had it going 75mph on some passes when he was flying it but I was going around 60-65mph. I'll figure out what the best cruise speed is once I fly more. At any rate it has plenty of reserve power above cruising speed.

I look forward to seeing you fly at Bensen days.
One question, did Steve spell it "Benson" on your shirt?

One question, did Steve spell it "Benson" on your shirt?
Yes, he did. I think he's been hanging around those Cajuns too much. It's actually a Brock KB-2 but who's going to argue with Steve?

I think Steve's time with GBA in AZ. scrambled his brain a bit. Must be the sun.
