hi everyone,
my name is Hector and I'm from Odessa Fl.(near Tampa).I'm a low time fw pilot about 100 hrs. SEL and I'm very interested in Gyroplanes.I have a few questions about what I need to get started in flying gyros. (1) with a PPL / SEL do you guys suggest a ultralight or a "n" number experimental gyro.(2) can I care a Passenger if I get a 2 place w/o a gyro rating.(3) do you guys know of a CFI in Fl for gyro training.why do the gyro guys seem to have more fun than the GA pilots?

Hey Hector,
You live in the Meca for gyro's. Florida is where it's at. The first thing I would suggest is attending one of our club's flyins. You can see pictures under the events page on here. Our club is Sunstate Rotor Club. There is one BFI here in the Tampa area he flys a tadem Dominator out of Wachula. His name is Dave Seace. Wachula is about an hour ride from Tampa proper. I live in Brandon and My dad ,who owns Rotor Flight Dynamics, lives in Wimauma. Give me a call and I can try to answer any questions you have 813-651-1258. And welcome to the wonderful world of gyros.

Hector,
If you already have the ASEL, by all means build an N-numbered machine. Most so-called ultralights are actually over the 254-pound limit, and the FAA is threatening tougher enforcement on that limit in the future. Ultralights can carry only 5 gallons of fuel, seldom have prerotators or good brakes, are banned from some airports, and don't allow you to log flight time toward an FAA rotorcraft/gyroplane rating.
If you're not carrying a passenger, you can legally fly a gyro registered as experimental with just your ASEL. Just get the training needed to solo proficiently, build hours flying without a passenger, and work toward a gyroplane checkride. You don't need to pass another written test to add the private gyroplane rating.
Fly safe, and have fun!

does the traing needed for solo have to be done by a CFI?

If you want to add en endorsement to your license it have to be CFI. If you want to fly single seat ultra, can be a BFI.
If you want to take passenger need to be rated. in type. what ever you go get training.

Chuck thank you for clearing that up.I see that you are located in Puerto Rico.I export tractor trailer parts to your Island.been to P.R. a few times it's a beautiful place.I stayed at Rio Piedra with a friend of my family.so I got to see both the cities in the day time (when I made sales calls) and the country style of life at evening.many mountains must be a little challenging to fly in P.R. here in FL every thing is flat

you are welcome to fly any time. yes over the mountains plus sea breeze is challenging. We always have 15 to 20 hitting you from all over the place.

Romulo Duenas is giving lessons out of Plant City, he is the process of becoming LSA instructor.
He flies a Golden Butterfly and speaks fluent spanish (from Venezuela)
Both the Golden and the Dominator are machines you should try, the are the best around and Dave Seace is a formidable pilot and instructor.
Welcome and have fun.

Hector,
A BFI or AFI can only train you in ultralights. The cost is often the same as CFI. If you want to add the gyroplane rating, I'd find a CFI.
