I am trying to figure out what size I should resize my photos for (this forum) I placed some in the Little Wing portion but it just put them there as a link that you would have to click on to open and then they were just small.

I was going to post some more photos of the windshield/skylight installation and am not sure how to make them appear in the message.
Should I crop them to say wallet size at a certain dpi or make them 31/2x5 at a certain dpi? Once I know what will work I'll write it down.
Thanks, jtm

ps I know it wants a very low file size and I can't remember what it is ...

If you attach more than one image, it will only list them. If you attach a single image to each post, it will show it. It seems to work best if they are 800 pixel wide.

Hi Todd, Thanks, I will see what I can do. Typically in photoshop we go by the size and then dpi. For a photographic print to the lab we send it the size we want, say 11x14 and then make sure it is created at 300dpi. I'll try to see if I can get a dimesion that works. jtm

can't remove them once they are posted? Photoshop says this file is 352k but when I looked at it here it said much less and the limit 150k. Something isn't right.....

Trying again ...

That looks much more like it. Photoshop says this image is 300x400 pixals wide.

It says the size of the photo is 4.16 x 5.55 with final size being 352k.

All I can think is that this is the size it is open and your 150k restriction lets this a compressed file come in. I'll experiment more as I try to post more. Thanks again Todd, jtm

James,

I edited your pictures above.

The first photo I reset the size to 600 pixels wide at 72 dpi. That is the usual size I use when I have to downsize a photo for posting on the forum. My screen resolution is set at 800x600, and a 600 pixel wide photo seems to fit well without running off the right side of the screen. They could actually be a little wider, but it's an easy number for me to remember.

I also use file compression in PaintShop Pro 6 to conserve drive space. For example in the first photo you posted, I saved it to my hard drive, resized it to 600 pixels wide, and when I saved it again I set the compression value to 39 (out of 100). I find that 39 seems to compress the file size without visible loss of detail or excess artifacting. You should have some similar capability in PhotoShop. The picture was 88.7Kbytes, it's now 58 Kbytes.

On your second photo, I didn't resize it. I just saved it to my hard drive, opened it in PSP, and resaved it at compression value 39. It went from 138 Kbytes to 20Kbytes! No loss in detail, and much smaller in file size.

I have never used PhotoShop so I am not sure how you would do it, but I'm sure there would be a topic on the Help index on compression. You may have to play around with it to see just what the best setting is in PhotoShop.

The better we resize and compress our pics, the less bandwidth and server space we will use. Everything loads faster too. ;)

HI Mike, Thanks for the info. A jpeg already being compressed and then telling it the quality level you want is do-able with a slider always showing about how much you want. 130k or so is so ridiculously small that it feels funny working with 20k. I will try to see what else I can do to make it small. Most moniters on newer machines are at least 17" and we run at more than 600 x 800. Now I think that maybe the photos are appearing much larger for other people than what I see. I will see what I can do to make them smaller. Thanks again, jtm

Todd,
I can't upload to the new gallery. The upload button does not highlight or activate. Not sure what my problem is. Thanks
