Here is Mike in a Cow pasture after a forced landing due to a Hirth engine out. I flew in with my Phantom with tools to fix his engine and he flew it back out of the field.
Mike won a Charmin award for the engine out landing. Tim Verroi who drove over and walked out to the gyro got chased by a charging Bull and that got Tim a Charmin award too! I think Tim needed another roll

Here is Mike in a Cow pasture after a forced landing due to a Hirth engine out.
This is remarkable. In a separate thread on this forum devoted to engine outs, the question was asked why it was that gyros seemed to have so many engine outs. The rash of replies to the original post denied this was a true reflection of the matter. But here we have another. I've been following this forum for about a month now, and I don't think I've been quietly amazed at the number of engine out reports.
Why is this?
This sort of frequency would be unheard of in GA circles. Is it because gyros are inexpensive, so we use cheap engines? Is it possibly to do with a lack of rigorous maintainance? Is it (god forbid) because gyro pilots do not always do comprehensive preflight checks?
I find it hard to believe that a good engine (Subaru, Rotax, Mazda rotary etc) would fail with anywhere near the frequency that I read of engine outs in this forum.
Confused,
Duncan

Please don't buger up this thread by changing subjects. This engine out was a Spark plug that came un screwed. It had nothing to do with the engine being a gyro engine, it is a popular Hirth engine used on ultralights and powered parachutes as well as gyros. Bottom line is Hirth engines are not as dependable as a Lycoming on a Piper Archer.

Ron did a great job of setting up camp. Great tent with 'awning' tent over it to give a great shade rest. Power, table chairs and more. I don't know where the bottle came from but it was not from Ron or I.
Duncan, I have a reply for you. I will start it in a new thread.
