I feel that I need more power in my Dominator 582. Does a tune pipe from R&D www.rdaerosports.com will do the trick? Has anybody used these pipes?
In the question and answer section on their web site they have answers that seem valid for the flat spot in the power curve's problem.
They also have featured two other engines there, the 670 and the 583. Has anybody had any experience with them?
Your ideas/suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,
Ramon

I had a pipe from them on a Hirth 2706, and it worked great. Just remember that the more power you pull out of that engine the less reliable it's going to be.

I agree with Matt,
As power goes up, so does fuel consumption, and reliability goes down.
You would be better advised to fit longer rotors as changing the engine can be a very expensive option..

More power means more heat means less reliability, more frequent rebuilds.
The other engines you mentioned have been tried on gyros with mixed results.
An engine is designed to operate within a certain heat range. Hopping it up with a high performance exhaust means that it will run hotter which means a bigger jet in the carbs. Fuel burn will be lousy.
You are better off buying a larger engine designed for that power range.
I have heard of some guys have had less than good service from R&D

Hey Tim, how did you take the VB beer can out of the pic?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL.
The last 2 days would have given me a 20 mph tail wind to central Oz. I wonder if it will be in the North tomorrow?
Next time anyone hears me dreaming up a stupid plan to sit on a Raf fuel tank for 6 hours a day for over a week, please belt me 'round the ears!!!!

I had the RD 670 and I was the one that give them a MZ gearbox to use on it more on that later. The 670 is like a big 618, it was out of a snow thing.
In the snowride it was rated 117HP at 8250 RPM. I ran it like a 618 6700 max rpm. I have to say it would fly very fast over 85 MPH that was all my ASI had. and this was with a gross of 800 pounds with 28' fleck blades. I had two gearbox Sh++ the bed so I sent it back and got the MZ202p. I was a Rotax 532 flyer before the 670 so I was ready for the power band. But this thing would be like nothing up to 4000 then hit you with it all. This power would kick in right when I didn't need it. I only hand start my blades so milking them up to speed and having the power come on like that is a blade flapper not good if don't know how to play with the blade. with a good pre rotator this should not be bad at all.
So yes I like the motor but not with a 3 to 1 gearbox.
FYI I was flying it with a 73" F powerfin that pushed hard. I still fly with this prop on the MZ202P getting nore like 350 with it.

AS you can see if you keep the RPM under 6800 you will not be pushing the motor any harder than the 582 or old 618. and still have 100HP about 80 ft. pounds of Torque now that is where all the power comes from the 582 is about 56 Ft. P. I don't like the R7D telling you to run it over 7000 but they say it is still under the 8250 in the snowmo.

Tks for your inputs, friends.
I spoke with Rob at R&D Aerosports. He told me that with the tune pipe there is a blank spot between 4,400 and 5000, but that I will always be at over 5000 due to the drag of the Gyro. Price of stainless steel exhaust is $525 plus $72.95 for mounting fixtures.
He is also offering the 670 at 105 hp at $3,370plus gearbox(I already have one), which includes new carburators, airfilter, rebuilt engine, stainless steel exhaust, flywheel to acommodate "C"gearbox. No electric start. Single ignition but with top japanese ignition system.
If I get it I will use the 3:47 to 1 ratio or the 4:0 to 1 ratio.
What do you think?

Ron,
This is the original thread where I got the idea of buying the tuned pipe. There is some additional information in it.
