I was going to write this in my other post in the 'airport' thread, but I decided to start a new thread to keep things separate.

I have read here that the magazine is lacking in content and that it could be better, like Sport Aviation or Kitplanes. As to the magazine quality, yeah I wish it were a little snappier, a little thicker. But Rick is only one person, and he can't be everywhere and write about everything.

I wish I could write stuff like Chuck, Doug, Greg, and the other knowledgeable people on this forum, but I don't have their experience or depth of knowledge. But I can write about what goes on in our little neck of the woods.

We at Chapter 20 try to write up articles about our fly-ins and send them in to Rick and so far he's printed all of them. Someone mentioned that they would hate to go to the trouble to write an article about their fly-in and it not get published. I think Rick would ecstatic if every chapter wrote one article about one fly-in that they hosted during the year. I counted 37 PRA chapters in the U.S., and 5 more in Canada, Germany, and Puerto Rico. If half of those chapters wrote up one fly-in article a year, we would have plenty of material for the year to supplant the more technical articles. And that's just fly-ins.

But imagine if someone from each chapter were to write a quick article about a recent completion of their own, or a member’s gyro.
Or a neat gizmo they've made to speed up construction on their gyro.
Or a cross-country flight they made to another fly-in.

And this doesn't include the PRA members who may not be affiliated with a local chapter.

Here on the Forum we 'oooh' and 'aaahh' when someone posts pictures of flying in the local area. Why not share? There are many people who don't use the Internet. I can think of a few in my chapter and I'm sure you can too. I'm sure they would be interested in just about anything to do with gyros, if someone would just type it up and email it to Rick. You don't have to be Hemingway either. Just have someone else proof it for you or circulate it amongst the chapter members for their input, and if you feel it needs a little peer review for technical content, I'm sure that any of our more technically minded people would be willing to help.

Most people now have, or have access to, a decent digital camera. As much as people like the articles, they also like pictures, especially if it's a gyro like what they're interested in. Or just club members sitting around having a good time at a fly-in. It lets them experience what may not be available in their area.

Take lots of pictures on the highest resolution setting on your camera.
Get your chapter members to send you their pictures too, and burn them all to CD along with the write-up and send it to Rick. Flood him with pictures! I'm pretty sure it won't break his heart to have to sift through them. :)

This Forum is populated with gyro enthusiasts from around the world. Any of whom could contribute something to the magazine. We all know our own areas and happenings better than any staff writer could.

Why not put it in the magazine?

(p.s. What you have just read is about 600 words, and with a handful of pictures would fill out 2-3 pages in the magazine ;) )

Good ideas Mike. I'd like to see a builders section documenting someone's build. Stan could send in some photos and a write up which could be split up over several issues. As many Sparrowhawks and gyrobees under construction it would be great to have a builder's log of each added.

Mike, I for one appreciate Chap 20's being active and presenting your activities to us thru the magazine. The people I would like to see provide the mag with material are those that complain the most about it. That means put up or shut up!

Gee, Dean, that was pretty juvenile and wasn't very nice? I just wanted to say that before Harry S. did!:)

If anyone has an opportunity to corner Rick at Bensen Days or Mentone then don't pass up the opportunity to find out what goes into the putting out the mag. I would like to see him put an article in the mag about that. If enough people are interested then maybe we could get him to give a presentation at Wauchula or Mentone.

Tim,

Stan's build would make for a good article, and he takes plenty of pictures to go along with it.

They have been a bunch of Bees built recently that would also make for good articles.

There are 1,662 users registered on this Forum.
The PRA has around 3000 members, so that's 1400 people who would probably enjoy the extra material.

Mike, you and Rudy do a great job of exporting our flyins thru the PRA mag. I have never written anything for the mag. but I really felt a part of things when you asked for some of my pictures on CD. I know you will submit an article on Bensen Days so I am bringing 1 gig or more of storage for my camera, a tripod and a video camera. So yall are going get tired of me snapping pictures. I did get Ricks phone number from Pam last week to find out what format he uses for the mag. I would like to try some do it yourself articles.

Mark,

I have always used the JPEG format when I sent the pictures to Rick.

Save them straight off of the camera to a folder on the computer, without processing or compressing them. Also don't use any slideshow software or viewer because the slideshow may be saved in another format.

Then just burn the individual files to a CD.

At max resolution, the pictures can always be downsized or cropped, but it's hard to stretch a small photo with any decent results.

INternet is the best vehicle, all info, news and pic are there almost instantly.
The editor of PRA Magazine should have a corner and direct subjects that he wants do publish, people send in the material and he pics and clips what he needs.
My proposal was to have the magazine online and publish it every two months, select articles to be kept handy.
I would buy the magazine if it was availabel and so do lots of people around gyros, some will buy it sporadicly but still that is income for the PRA.
I believe a little effort is needed to get the magazine more leverage in the financial aspect, just need to know what do we have now and what is neede to boost magazine and get sales started.
thanks

What is people's feeling about "borrowing" articles from Chapter newsletters. I wrote a relatively long article for our Chapter 73 March newsletter. If Rick liked it, he could borrow it to put in the magazine. I could send him original pictures too.

I'm a member of some other organizations, and each has its own approach. One group does nothing but put on an annual convention that I've never been to yet. Another, the Special Forces Association, publishes a thick monthly magazine. Most of the magazine comes from the Association's chapters around the world. (Given the nature of the organization, there are two to four pages of obituaries, also). I enjoy those very much because I lose track of people, and I can look in The Drop (as the magazine is called) every month and I see the names of folks I've lost track of.

Re-using local content, like Gary suggests, is a very good idea, as long as it's of sufficiently general interest. And I think that does include what chapter members are up to -- just remember that all of us scattered around the world don't know your members the way that you do.

cheers

Gary, if I'm not mistaken, one of the conditions of being a local chapter is unconditional permission for PRA to re-use anything in chapter newsletters. I'm not sure there's any formal effort made by anyone to gather it all together each month, and some chapters have more formal newsletters than others.

In 2 weeks we should be able to put together another article for Rotorcraft.
It's chapter 20's 1st gathering for 2006.
I'll try to take as many pictures as possible.
