Well Now that John let the cat out of the bag, I picked up his engine today, So I am going to post pictures instead of actually doing anything.
Here ya go boy!

Sorry I didn't get a picture of the forklift driver, but he was a white kid with baggy pants and his hat on backwards, and an ear ring, so you don't really need to see any more of that.

It was packed up all real nice , just like Christmas........Without the bills!:D

I used the hoist to yank it out of the box, and everything looks real good!:D

Thankyou so much Scott. WOW it is PURRDY! That aint no VeeDubb now is it?:D

The starter is comming off and replaced with a pull start. The gearbox will be flipped to mount on the UltraWhite II when it get's here.

Ok Ernie, I got the engine! Where's the rest of it?:D

Yeah Ron. Brand New 618 from Lockwood!

Of course it's used. Freshly rebuilt with all new crank, pistons, the works.

GyroRon
03-03-2006, 04:06 PM
Just curious.... The Yellow hot rod ignition wires give it away.

Who rebuilt it? I ask this with all seriousness because MOST rebuilds on these engines are nothing more than a teardown, new rings, maybe new pistons and reassemble. The crankshaft replacement is probably the most important part of a rebuild on these engines that is overlooked or lied about when the engine is sold.

GyroRon
03-03-2006, 04:07 PM
Does Scott have the tool to pull the gear off the crankshaft? I think if I remember from doing my gearbox mods, you got to pull the gear off to take the gearbox off or flip it etc...

Screw

Screw-In

The seller is an A&P, who did the rebuild himself.

Keep in mind Ron.....who has the engine now. If there are any problems, I'm guessing Scott will not only sniff it out, but have a solution as well.

I bought the engine fully aware that it may need to be overhauled.

GyroRon
03-03-2006, 06:17 PM
Yeah Scott is a good guy with a wrench and I am sure your in good hands. The problem with what may or may not be a problem is it requires a teardown to find the problem... or wait for the engine to quit one day. Or you just trust that the last guy knew what he was doing. I don't have too much fear for you like I did with the hotrod vw you were putting in the LW... I hope it works out for ya. Just scared me a little to see those wires. In the 10+ years I have been around Rotax engines, I have yet to see another engine modified like this. When something unusual stands out on a engine it makes me stop and question everything else about it. Seeing some of the " rebuilds " a local close to here does - he is not a Rotax mechanic, just a self taught motorcycle mechanic - I have come to my own conclusion that I would prefer a high time never been cracked open Rotax over most so called rebuilds, unless the rebuild comes with good documentation of the proper parts and services done. Maybe you got all that, so I will shut up about it now.

Going to let Scott pimp it out for you before installing it on your gyro? Orange pain on the head? Chrome muffler???

scottessex
03-03-2006, 06:38 PM
I am going to give it a thourough check out, probably even hook it up to the test stand and run it. From the visual inpection, It is very clean on the inside and has not been run, fresh hone on the cylinders, visualy it looks like a fresh overhaul.

Funny you mentioned the orange paint, I told john he could have an orange head 618!

Those yellow wires, are they carbon or solid core. ?

Rons is right if those wires are not meant for a rotax there may be problems down the road.

John,

I thought you were getting a 618 with an "E" box? What happened to that deal?

Heh... pull starting a 618 with a 60" prop will get old very very quickly. You might consider coughing up for the RK-400 clutch on that C-box.

jdalexa
03-06-2006, 10:20 AM
Does Scott have the tool to pull the gear off the crankshaft? I think if I remember from doing my gearbox mods, you got to pull the gear off to take the gearbox off or flip it etc...

You only have to remove the big gear if you are pulling the propshaft or changing gear ratios. To flip the gearbox takes no special tools other than the proper allen wrenches.

Pulling that big gear is a drag though. Need the puller, a hot torch, a fixture, and a big ol' cheater bar.

scottessex

Maybe I had to pull the gear off the crank to install my Clutch...

The Clutch does make starting somewhat easier in the prop isn't turning, but without the prop turning there is little flywheel effect and the pull seems just as hard or maybe harder on my 582.

Guys....I don't have a urine problem, however I am very excited.

Let me make it clear. When I first got into gyros, I didn't like the Dominator because of the way it looked. It has a tail tail, long gear, and the seat is as high as a shoe shine chair.

Not only did I not like them because of the apperance, but also because everybody has one. Hell, Bensen Days should be called "Dominator days."

Ron Awad, at SX days, gave me the opportunity to fly his Dominator. He then gave me another opportunity at ROC 2004. I flew John Palmers 2 place Dominator at ROC 2005. I knew I had to have one, but I wanted a 2 place.

John Palmers 2 place didn't fly like any 2 place I had ever flown before. It felt like a fat Single rather than a 2 place. I was hooked, but I was in the middle of a Littlewing Project that I was comming in short on, and just didn't have the time to complete with the new baby and all.

As you know, the LittleWing sold very quickly and has allowed me the opportunity to obtain one of the best flying gyroplanes on the market IMHO. Talk about "Bang for the Buck," I couldn't be more pleased.

But....How can I do a 2 place Dominator differant than most with my limited funds?

A: 2 place UltraWhite with a 618. Normaly, an UltraWhite will come in Nude aluminum with a white tail (trimed in black), all steel structures in black, and a small white pod.

My UltraWhite will come painted as a normal UltraWhite with the exception that the normaly Nude aluminum, will be Orange.

Of Course, I'm still so excited, I could pee.

Barry (propless) K

Hey Barry,

Dollar for dollar, the Warp is the best bang for the buck and they are almost indestructable. Rotax definately does not have any problem spinning the prop iether.

In an attempt to keep the wieght down, I wanted a lightwieght prop, so the Warp was out. Now it became a toss up between Powerfin and Kiev. I really don't have an opinion because I haven't flown iether, but Kiev is what I went with. Experimental! Aint it great! Greg Spicola turn me on to them. I'll blame him if it doesn't work out.

Doug Riley
04-05-2006, 03:21 PM
OK, smokemeister, here's a tip:

Watch out for welding mounting brackets onto 618 mufflers. For some reason, the 618 muff is not like the regular Rotax muffler (which is a single-wall, thick can). The 618 has a thin outer wall that encases a thicker inner wall. If you manage to weld something to it without it just burning away, that thin metal is prone to oil-canning and cracking. Mine oil-canned right off. I then had some 1" x 14 ga. stainless bands made up to form wrap-around clamps. That worked better, except for needing to wait 5 months for a new muffler from Austria.

Well, the Eagle has landed for sure. Scott has the pics. To make a short story long.........

My wife Barbi and I decided to take the opportunity to spend some time with each other and our new son Pacer. The three of us left Friday afternoon at 1600 hrs with an ETA to Scott's (SX Ultralight Aviation......The home of Bling Bling for Your Flying Thing) of 1800. Mary, Scott's wife, beat us there. Both Scott and Mary met Pacer for the first time.:D

After hooking up the trailer and a brief visit, we departed Scott's for south Ga. Barbi and I determined we could stay for free at her brothers place and call it an official visit. We arrived at 2230 at her brother place in Whigham, Ga. (Between Cairo and Bainbridge). We visited, drank, and watched her brother latest "Ghost Hunting video." I'm still not convinced, but the entertainment was priceless. What can you do about family.:o

Sticking to a strick schedule, we departed her brothers place Saturday, at 0900 hours for Ocala Fl. Barbie's father passed away about the time she was about to give birth to Brock. She never went to the funeral or has seen her father's grave. She made a flower arraingement and we were were at his grave at 1330 hours. After visitation, lunch, and a short rest break we were Tampa bound.

On the way of Course, we got to see the 13 foot Alligator, X Mart, and Russell Stover's factory warehouse on the way.

We were at Ernies by 1738. Ernie and Connie were very kind and helpful. I had never met Connie, but it didn't take long to realize we were in very good company. Ernie showed me everything and helped me load up for the long trip home. After a brief visit we were on the road again at 1833 hrs. We drove straight to Scott's and made it by 0330 hours Sunday Am.

Scott and I began looking over and unloading at 0700. Barbi, Pacer, and I spent the whole day with Scott and Mary, and had a blast. Very nice road trip and Barbi and I got to spend some good quality time together. We have been kinda missing on each other with work, kids, and all.

Scott has the pics, and there will be more to come.

The trip wasn't without a little road rash. I noticed early on that the upper landing gear support was slidding up the mast and taking paint with it. There really wasn't anything I could do since I didn't have any wrenches, and I had nothing to support the wieght of the gyro.

By the time we got to Scott's, the support traveled about three inches up the mast and yes, it stripped the paint right off. Scott and I re-adjusted the support, and clamped it down good. Scott believes he can fix it right up. After seeing my engine, I believe him.

Of course, all of us spent time getting in and out making engine noises.

The best news of all......We weighed it. Without blades and as pictured previously, she weighed in at 172lbs.

I figure 50-55 lbs for blades will leave me 148lbs of engine, instruments, prop installation to keep her at 375.

And yes.....I got the 27 footers.:D

Looks like a lot more stuff still needs to go on the gyro to make it finished. Curious what it will weight when done. Mine weights 400 pounds minus fuel, I could lighten it up by probably 25-30 pounds by ditching the pod and going to the lighter wheelbarrow wheels. Either way what yours weights now is very impressive for a two place machine!

She weighs in right now at 172lbs. 50-55lbs for blades will leave us with 148lbs to do all of the above and keep her at 375lbs.

Did you add fins to the engines cylinders or is it still water cooled? If it is then add some more pounds for the radiator and hoses and a gallon or three of coolant.

I think the blades will weight more than that too, not by much but certainly closer to the 55 pounds than the 50.

Anyway we will see.... my guess is a even 400 pounds, to a max of 425.

400 pounds, wow that is light for a 2 seater. what kind of proformance are you expecting?

I'd like to answer that question and I wish Ernie, Udi, Dean Dolph, Jim Mayfield, or Vance would field this one.

I'm not that bright....but I'll try. I think that Power to wieght ratio is the key to great performance in combination with disc loading. Lets leave Disc loading alone for a minute and get to power to wieght ratio.

There are a few 2 place machines out there with 160hp engines. Of the ones I know of, they weigh in at 1200-1300lbs. These big boys need that power for sure.

If I can keep my machines weight at 400lbs (1/3rd the wieght of the above) or less, with 75hp (Roughly 1/2 the hp), I'm hoping for better numbers in terms of "Power to wieght ratio."

400lbs (machine) + 50lbs (fuel) + 220;bs (me) = 670lbs AUW / 75hp = 8.93lbs per HP. SOLO.

400lbs (machine) + 50lbs (fuel) + 220;bs (me) + 80lbs ("DaBug") = 750lbs AUW / 75hp = 10.00lbs per HP. SOLO + child.

400lbs (machine) + 50lbs (fuel) + 220;bs (me) + 200lbs (Dual) = 870lbs AUW / 75hp = 11.6lbs per HP. Dual.

We are looking at a 9-12lbs per HP range depending on AUW (All Up Wieght) loading.

I have 27ft Dragon Wings. Area = 572.27 Square ft.

670 AUW / 572.27 = 1.17lbs per square ft. SOLO....This is very light in terms of Disc Loading.

750 AUW / 572.27 = 1.31lbs per square ft. SOLO + Child.....This is Perfect disc Loading for Dragon Wings.

870 AUW / 572.27 = 1.52lbs per square ft. DUAL......1.5-1.7 is recommended disc loading for 2 place applications.

As you can see after digesting all of that.....I'm trying to build a very light weight 2 place machine with good Power to weight ratio and light disc loading for optimum flight performance. The only numbers that scare me is the disc loading SOLO.....That's a little too light and I'll probably fly with 80-100lbs of wieght in the rear seat when flying solo.

That's my best shot, if anyone whats to comment on the numbers, please do. Verify my thinking is on track.

Johnathan Wise (Automan123) pulled damn near 700lbs of thrust at ROC.....But I'm not trying to fly Titanic.:D  I'm Kidding Johnny Boy!

I just saw your post, John.

I really like your numbers. You don't have to worry about the disk loading at solo (1.17) - that is not too low. You may bob a little in gusts, but it is safe. Your RRPM should be around 300 solo (this may not sound like much but tip speed is still higher than 400 fps). Those 27 ft DWs have a pretty high inertia so I don't expect your RRPM to fluctuate too much. Maybe Ernie can comment too. It wouldn't hurt for you to carry a sand bag the first few flights but I bet you will really like the performance without the sand.

You may want to talk with Dave Sease who is flying pretty much the same gyro, and he weighs less than you do.

Udi

GyroRon

I weighted my pig yesterday before taking it apart for my new seat and fuel tank experiment. It weighted 400 pounds exactly ready to fly with only about 1/2 a gallon of fuel in the tank I couldn't get drained out.

I know the pod and windshield on my ship is heavy, and my dashboard is slightly heavy being made out of aluminum instead of fiberglass or plastic. Also I have a small battery and the smoke system.

I figure if I took those items off, I probably would weight 30-35 pounds less. So I believe 400 pounds for Johns two place is very realistic, even though I doubted it at first.

How will it fly? Depends who is holding the stick....

Big Red Flies just fine... when the temps get above 83-85 then I have to get into the extra power. If I lost 40 lbs, put the smaller battery in, saving 25lbs and eliminated an extra 10lbs of b.s horn etc then I am sure it would fly with more than adequate power reserve above 85f. above that the humidity and DA are felt in a negative way.

Since I know how the machine handles, and do not waste power I can say that I can cruise at 4775 with 410lbs of pax and full tanks of 19-20 gallons fuel. Not bad in 83 degrees. Reported D.A of 1400' I am at sea level.

I can climb at 5000rpm
my max rpm is 5350~

Light has its advantages the rotor rpm is the most important though. Too low rotor rpm leaves for soggy stick response.

Back on topic.......It's my pleasure to announce to you that at approximately 1535 hours today, Scott Essex breathed life into "DaScrew-Driver II" for the first time.

She fired off on the first pull and all instruments, Temps, and RPM's are within normal parameters. We did manage to overspeed the engine a little which means we need to re-pitch the prop.

We are waiting on a 70 inch to return from Powerfin. This prop will be used until my new 70.9 inch Kiev arrives.

For right now though, we are using a 60 inch Warp drive to break in the engine. The pitch is set at 16 degrees and we over sped the engine. The engine has gobbs of power and squatted the nosewheel with authority.

Today has been a very productive day. Thanks you Scott. We are lacking the assembly of the pre-rotator hoses, looming the wires, basic clean up, and a Hang Test. We should be ready for flight testing by SX Days.

BTW- "DaScrew-Driver II" currently weighs in without blades at 316lbs with fluids minus fuel and hydrolic fluid. This wieght includes coolant, radio, antenna, Warp prop, and all that is going to be installed. We are still looking good at keeping her under 400lbs with blades.

I'm so excited I could pee!:D

Yes we need to repitch the prop, when those RAVE valves open that sucker wants to go! I hope to get some good weather this week and sit down with the chart and do a break in. Today we just ran it for a couple of minutes to check the gauges etc. All that stuff has to be working before I can do a break in run, I'll put 2 degrees more pitch in the prop and we'll see how that goes, the I'll tie it to the polel out front and run it for an hour following the break in procedure.

Still have to safety wire, hook up hydraulic hoses, tie up wires, set idle speed etc, but it seems to run well. Jetting should be correct, everything seems to be ready to go!

We got some much needed rain today so we ran the gyro in the hangar with it tied to the back of John's truck.

If it is a 60 inch 3 blade warp, you might want to try pitching it to 20 degrees measured at the tips as a starting point. I think mine was at 19 degrees with the old 3 to 1 ratio. I was able to drop it back to around 12 degrees when I changed to a 2.67 to 1 ratio.

Mike I was having high EGT's and water temps. The radiator cap was wrong, and the expansion tank had a weld bead pushing up on the cap seal. Got all that fixed. Installed a temp EGT gauge and am getting a lower reading than the EIS.
Still working with prop pitch and jets.
One ignition was bad on the stator coil. It worked at idle to about 4000 rpm and then became erratic. checked good on the bench, go figure.
Radiator cap thing solved , Ignition problem solved, just have to get the EGT down and we should be good. I just didn't have enough time to get it ready before the fly in.

Bones, I still don't have the pulley for the hyd pump or the belt on at this time, once I get everything else ironed out I will install the belt, and prop spinner.

The prop hub has a pulley for a flat belt instead of a pre rotator drum. The cable moves an idler pulley to tighten the belt.

What made you decide to go outside with your cables??
The rudder cables I assume? That is the way Ernie built the airframe.

I like the cables on the outside it makes them alot easier to inspect and clean, lube etc. Drilling holes in the keel lets in dirt, corrosion etc, plus it can weaken it at a high stress area, such as the tail keel where the gyro sets on the tail wheel everytime you land.

Hello Scott.

Looking good. Excellant machine.
Lovely 618 and the awesome prop. Very glad to see you doing well.

Just make sure you have a retaining clip on those rudder cable pulleys, so they dont get off the pulley when loose.

Hell Yeah, Temps are down and my britches are wet! I can't wait to ride that pony!

The prop is pitched to 6500RPM on the ground. The prop is very quiet and Scott's trees have no more leaves.

Scott mounted the radio on the panel, and I mounted the Intercom behind the front seat. As a result, we have a few radio type issues that I think I have solved today. I sent my patchcord back to Comtronics so that they can stretch the Audio cables to 8 ft. This way I can keep the patchcord under my seat and use the PTT. I also ordered from them a 6 ft. power cord for the intercom, and went to radio shack and got a power cord for my Icom.

Communications are solved.

Scott is wanting to make another bracket or two for the radiator hose and overflow bottle. Outside of that, we are ready to "Hang Test" and Test-Fly.

From the Fasion and Design Department (FDD), we have just obtain the checker board needed to complete the paint scheme.

Ok folks! We be almost ready to "Test Fly." We were gonna try and test fly it next Sunday, but Steve will be out of town, so looks like we will shoot for the Sunday after that.

Communications have been resolved.

Instrument panel is complete and it looks great! Maybe Scott will post a pic or two.

We have completed the Hang Test and we are nose heavy. I will be calling Ernie tomarrow about the results which were:

With me (207lbs) in the front seat and less than a 1/2 tank of fuel in the rear seat, we are hanging at 5 1/2 - 6 degrees on the mast. The head is in the most forward position, and the front seat is in the furthest back position. It looks like we will have to add wieght to the rear of the A/C to balance it out.

The engine is running strong, and I got to taxie it around yesturday to check the brakes and tracking. I didn't not taxie any faster than a slow walk and really had to stay on the brakes to keep it that slow! Baby wanted to go!

All looks good with "Green Lights" across the board, and Scott looks like a proud Pappa.

We just torqued the snot out of that bracket. It shouldn't go anywhere. I spent some time taxie it around the other day on Scott's field, and it didn't move.

As you suggested at SX Days, if it does become a problem, we can run a cable to an airframe bolt to lock it in place.

I installed another clamp right above it from 1" angle to help hold it. I also have AN4 bolts that go through the tubes the shocks are attached with. (I noticed yours oesn't have them) It take alot off tourqe to hold those shock clamps together!!

Doug Riley

AN nuts are softer than the bolts. If the nuts strip, it's too tight. If they don't, it's not.

On my 2-place, they slipped only once, thanks to a crunchy landing by a student who will remain anonymous. The slippage probably prevented any bending of other things.

If the brackets get too high on the mast, the nosewheel and tail wheel touch the ground at the same time and make it hard to turn.

John & Scott,

Referring to hang test post #216, why is adding weight being considered instead of a new set of cheek plates to move the rotor head forward?

Congrats on your progress.

Rob

GyroRon
08-09-2006, 06:42 AM
Rob, adding weight is the easy fix for that problem. I spoke with John last night and tried to explain that new cheekplates is the only real solution worth looking at. Adding weight to his machine should be a last resort, as he plans to fly two people with extremely marginal power, 10-15 pounds of lead weight in the tail is not the best way to fix that!

scottessex
08-09-2006, 06:45 AM
Well there is nothing to move or relocate, so it will be new cheekplates,
Tried to avoid this as the 2 place cheek plates are QUITE a bit different than the single place plates.

The 2 place uses a set of cheek plates that tie the mast and the 2 front braces together, plus it has 1x2 riveted in place, etc. Not quite as simple as 2 small plates.

Screw
08-09-2006, 09:20 AM

I spoke to Ernie this morning and he is making me a new cheek plate assemble for me that will move the head forward.

This will solve the problem without gaining any weight since we did work so hard to keep the weight down.

I agree that adding wieght to the rear of the A/C isn't a good idea, but as Ron says, it is an easy fix.

But Don't worry. After considering what all has been involved money and time wise, there is no sense in taking short cuts now.

Scott will be sending Ernie the old cheek plate assembly, and we will be receiving another one.:D

RobO

Sounds like a plan. If the ship was hanging 5-1/2 degrees (either way), those plates will be significantly different like you said. On my single place, one inch of head offset wasn't far off from a one degree change in hang angle. To change that hang angle by three degrees (to get to the optimal ~2.5) would have meant moving the head around three full inches.

Also, by using new cheek plates and not adding weight, you'll have less to sling around the CG in the yaw and pitch axes (a more favorable moment of inertia).

Rob

The 2 place Dominator hangs between 1-5 degrees. This time of year, I weigh in at 207lbs and after I put on my "Winter Coat," I'm closer to 220lbs.

We are gonna set it up at 4 degrees at my current wieght giving some room for the "Winter Coat." Unfortunately, no one over the 220lbs weight limit can sit in the front seat.

However, by moving the seat forward, we should be able to accomodate someone around 160lbs in the front seat as well.

The only way I can set the balance at 2 1/2 degree with me in the front seat would be to move the head forward 3 inches. By doing so, anyone up front much lighter with make the gyro tail heavy.

We will make changes as needed, however, after discussing the matter at length with Ernie (The Master), this would be the place to start.

Very pleased to announce that at around 0900 hours this Am, CFI Steve McGowan taxied, crowhopped and test flew "DaScrew-Driver II."

Scott has the pictures.

As expected, we had some adjustments that needed to be made. Most were trim, and control related, and after every change, another flight.

The numbers look very well. Steve said, "At 4500 RPM and 270RRPM she's flying and there aint nuthin you can do bout it!" He siad he was flying comfortably at 45mph @ 5000RPR and 295-300RRPM. All temps lloked great which meant no re-pitching the prop or re-jetting the carbs.

Steve couldn't believe the machine weighed in at 401lbs, but seemed to like the combination. When asked how the engine felt "Feels good, but I aint got in it yet."

After another flight or two, he got the engine up to 70mph @ 6000RPM. The prop (which he also liked alot) was pitched to 6500RPM on the ground......Which means he still had more throttle to go. We think in the air, the engine will get up to 6800-7000RPM.

Around noon and after all the adjustments and going for another flight Steve picked up on a "Different" sound comming from the engine just after wheels up. He immediately set her down and returned.

Scott and Steve began looking over the engine and slowly turning the prop and did hear something inside one of the cylinders that wasn't right.

This scrubbed the remaining test flights for the day. The good news is Steve caught it before doing any harm to the engine, machine or to himself.

All in all, I consider today to have been very successfull for several reason:

1. The machine flies straight and according to Steve, "Smooth as a button." No bad habbits and easy to fly.

2. Laid aside any fear of being "Underpowered and over rotored." Steve said the Power to wieght ratio felt good and the machine was strong.

3. Does not appear to have any flair or nose heavy problems, nothing a stiffer trim spring wont fix.

I'm very pleased with todays results. And looking forward to going again.
