I finally have the project almost completed.I now have electric trim. All wiring done and actuators mounted in place. I have to finish the cable . It is run. All it needs is nicoed in place. I mounted the actuators where it was the most convient and could still use the RAF trim system to some degree. I converted the trim box to an electrical box. Pictures below. Also included is my helper. Amanda says she wants to fly this ship!!! She is my seven year old grandaughter.:)

Looks good Larry, Do you have any pictures that show the whole thing. I have been thinking on the lines of adding elec trim to my RAF mod and need more ideas. Every little bit helps. Thanks

I pulled out all cables from the sheath from inside the cabin. The actuators hang with the moving shaft facing downward . The springs and chain from the old system remain in place. I hook the cable that was attatched to the chain that ran inside to the trim is now hooked up to the actuator arm. I used the trim box as a electrical box by turning it so the flat end stood straight up. Two switches provide the roll and pitch. Should work great!

Looks good Larry. This electric trim is going to be all right. I hooked mine up after work and its working real slick. I can release all the tension for putting the gust lock on. It have the controls on the cyclic...it took a while to run all the circuits...but its done now.

Park. if you look real close in the above picture you can see the doors are mounted. And the heater works!!! Also a question about 2 actuators. One is for roll and one is for pitch.
Stan. You are right on the slick part.So nice to just push buttons.( that goes for people ,too.)

The new additions are all finished and the Boyer Warrior is in the hanger at Morgantown airport. I ran out of time Sat. so I didn't get to test fly the trim system. If we get some deceint weather this week, I will try out the new trim, heater, and doors.

Thanks Stan. I'll post the results. It will be easier to push a button than turn a crank. Should be safer also. My birth day is coming up. What do you think I could ask for that would be another convience to the RAF?
I know!!!! Auto pilot!!! We all want our machines to fly themselves anyway. Then we don't have to learn any flying skills. Just push a button and we get a scenic ride. I'll work on that.

Stan. Hows the Sparrow Hawk progressing? I must be missing your posts and pictures of your progress.

You lazy s**ts. I remember back in the old days, late in the last century, when I had to actually hand-crank my trim with brute strength. You guys are spoiled.

An kick start the motor bike, an run in to listen to the wireless when Bradman
came in to bat, an the peddle radios we had in the bush, an the chip heaters
to warm the bathwater, an the big copper tub in the 44 gal drum to do the
laundry outside, an the outside dunny that we had to dig a hole to empty,
an the " I'll show you mine", etc. games that we would play with the little
girls at the the bush dances that our Parents took us too twice a year !
Tell me about it.
I miss the old ways an look forward to loosing me mind an reliving them ?
I havta keep reminding me missus that I am her dickhead when she reminds
me that I am a dickhead.

Larry, you're not far off. My very first car was a 1952 MG TD that I bought when I was 19. It had electric start, but if I ran the battery down during a cold Chicago winter, I had a crank that I could insert at the bottom of the grill and hand-crank her. I had to do it several times. Almost took my arm off one time when it kicked back.

Guys:

I have the factory supplied RAF Stabilator which provides pitch trim and another linear actuator for roll trim. Having electric trim is GREAT. I have mounted my trim switch as a coolie hat on my cyclic. It is very simple to use. I have an LED indicator on the panel to show the position of the pitch trim.

Robert. You sound like you grew up like the Dobsons up in Treaster Valley, Penna. They had outside plumbing. A running stream beside the house and an outhouse. The stream was the tub and shower. When the water got high in the spring, it cleaned out the outhouse! I am happy to say that I did not grow up with out the convience of inside plumbing. I used to go to a hunting camp that had similiar conditions to the Dobsons. I was happy to come back to a civilized lifestyle.


I am not demeaning that lifestyle in any way. It's just that I am glad I didn't have to experience it. My mother on the other hand grew up with an outhouse and a Sears catalog as the paper convience. She says that she was glad when she moved off the farm and into town and indoor conviences.So my Mom says it all when she says there is nothing like modern conviences. That goes for cool gagets also!

Thats just the way it was in our area Larry, when we were kids.
It was great. Sure taught us to be independant and resourceful and to this
day I dont envy any kid that grew in the cities.
During the war years I lived on the Garden Island Naval Base, with my mother, which was interesting and educational but at the end of that we went back to the farm.
We never did get indoor plumbing and running water but I remember in 52 when we got electricity ! Boy that was a day to remember. My Gran had purchased her first ever refrigerator a few weeks before and when it was finally turned on she kept the door open to see it working !
Beautiful woman she was.
Then bloody TV came along about 55 or 6, Things were never the same after that. Dammit.

All kidding aside, I'm just about ready to fiy my new and improved ship. I have been taxiing with the new engine and the power is incredible. I'm going to do a new hang test this weekend and then put on the rotors. If the weather cooperates I should make the maiden flight this weekend.

Robert! Good to reminise. Things were sure less stressful in the 50-60's.

Another note. I went flying this afternoon to try out the new devices. Electric trim is to cool!!! Also flew with the new doors and heat. I am becoming to domesticated!!! i flew in my shirt, no coat.It got so warm I had to turn off the fan.I also took Paul P's advice on the rpm range of 5400+ to get in the cam range. I went to 13 degress from the 15 I was at.Rpm went to 5450 with a drop of 2 degrees in prop pitch.. Scary HP!!!!!! That engine just screams back there. It also idles at 1250 from 1000 with the reduced pitch.

I was at the airport last night. The new engine is installed and running SMOOTH!!!! Remember I went from the 2.2 to the 2.5 and my 2.5 has the cirrus cam grind. That means that I've went from 130 HP to about 195 HP. I also went from a 3 blade to a 4 blade prop.

I've set the angle of the prop to 14 degrees to start. We'll see how this works out. Last night all I did was some high speed taxiing to get the feel of the new engine (lots of power for sure) and to break the engine in. I was also checking out the other systems. For instance I had to adjust the steering. I also had to add a ground wire to the instrument panel. Everything is working perfectly now.

By the way, I did all the taxiiing without the rotors installed. This weekend I plan to do a new hang test. I haven't done one since I made the drop keel modification. Then I will install the rotors and, weather permitting, have my first flight in my new and improved bird.

For your information I purchased the upgraded RAF hub bar. It really has a bit more meat to it. I will try to get some pictures soon.
