Russ, Ron, MJ, Mike, or ANYBODY who knows:
If you were at US 98 and Interstate 75, what route would you take to Wauchula?
How good (or bad) are US 98 and US 17 between I-75 and Wauchula?
Russell

Chuck your best bet is to take I-75 to 62 head east to 27 then south to Main Street in Wauchula. It might be 64 I will look at a map when I get home from work. I use to go thru Lakeland but it gets way to complicated and too busy and lots of bad bumps in the road (almost lost the gyro off the trailer) :P US 98 and 75 is brooksville you will have about 2 hours from that point. I get to 75 at that same point.

Thank you Russ,
You are correct. It is 62. I agree, that looks a lot better than going through Lakeland on 98.
However, from looking at my map, it appears that it might be even better to go East on 62 about 36 miles, then South about 5 miles on N County Road 663, then East about 2.75 miles on Vandolah, then South on Maurice Sonny Clave Road to the airport. This way, we won't even go to Wachula, and it should also be several miles shorter.
Take another look at it Russ, and let me know what you think?
Thanks again,
Chuck

Miles, she never got back to me.
How about it MJ? Did you ever get Rick to confirm the route I thought would be best? I posted it on: March 28, 2004, 05:41:55 AM
Miles, when are you going to be leaving? Maybe we could meet in Mobile or Pensacola and make most of the trip together.

Chuck The I-75 to 62 is the best rt the exit is Parrish the road is Moccoson Wollow RD not sure of the exit # take it east to US 301 south on 301 for about 1 mile then east on 62 you have the rest have safe trip :)

Chuck I don't have a time set in stone yet. I've got a vacation week booked so any time is good.
I have been seriously considering leaving Sunday night around midnight to beat the traffic.
When are you leaving?

Chuck Bevitt is driving down from Virgina this saturday morning with his gyro and is meeting me Saturday afternoon. Late saturday afternoon we hope to have my Phantom took apart and loaded - decided not to bring Barrys Gyrobee - and Then we plan to catch some ZZZs and then We plan to hit the highway at 5am Sunday morning and drive straight through. It is about a 10 hour drive.
I am camping in a big tent that will be either next to or under a white 10x20 foot portable carport I am going to set up. Chuck has rented a travel trailer from a local outfit and they will have it delivered and set up waiting on him by the time we get down there.
i am terrible with names and faces till I have spent a little time with ya so please be sure to look me up and re introduce yourselves to me.
I am looking forwards to next week!!!

Chuck, Rick says it is exit 229 off I-75 then following Gregs info and we will see you soon. Make sure you head south on Hwy 17 till you get into Wauchula and look for Airport sign and Main Street is the road turn Right. Go down to Vandolah Rd turn Right. You will see the signs for BD Days. :)

However, that is not the route that I described in my post.

Miles, I'm not on a schedule either. I had planned to drive straight through after I get several hours of sleep.
I still have some work to do on the machine as I have an electrical short somewhere that I would like to get fixed before I load it up.
Hopefully, I can leave no later than early Monday morning or before.

MJ,
No problem. I understand that he must be quite busy right now.
Miles,
Greg Spicola, who lives in that area, did confirm that the route that Russ and I came up with is the best route.
Per my MapSend data, the following should be pretty accurate:
I – 75 South to exit 229 (or the Parrish exit), then East on Moccasin Wallow Road to highway 43/301, South .4 miles to Highway 62, East 30 miles to 663, South 5.2 miles to Vandolah, East 2.78 miles to Maurice Sonny Clave Road, S to the airport on the left.
Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the map Heron. I tried to copy and paste a yahoo map onto this message box but it wouldn't take.
Can you (or someone) tell me how you did it?
Chuck thanks for the detailed directions. Are you gonna come down I-59 to I-10 or are you gonna hit I-10 around Gulfport?
Chuck Irby
04-01-2004, 06:16 AM
Miles, I won't hit I 10 till I get to Mobile, just west of the tunnel.
Heron, Can you post a map with the directions I posted above? We don't want to take the route you highlighted, as it will take much longer.

Anybody else flying on the airlines into Tampa on Wed. mid-day? I'd love to share a rental car or hitch a ride w/ shared expenses. I'll be tenting on the field and will only need the car to get there and then back to Tampa Sat.

Okay, I see your not against using the roads with the traffic lights every 10 miles or so.
I drove to Rogers Arkansas once using the direct route and came home on all interstate. Although longer the trip home took an hour less time. :)

Miles, from my house to the tunnel, there are only about 5 lights and it's only 110 miles. 84 East, then 45 South.

Doug,
I am flying in Thursday and out Sunday Morning.

04-01-2004, 03:20 PM
Doug how bad are the rental rates? Maybe you ought to go crazy and just rent a Harley Davidson????
GyroRon
04-01-2004, 03:21 PM
Or skip the whole car ride over and Charter a small plane to fly you from Tampa directly to Wauchula!

Ron, One more time please!
When do you plan to arrive at BD?
Doug Riley
04-02-2004, 05:12 AM
Ron, the cheapest rate I've found for the cheapest car I can get is $250 with tax. Heck, I'm going to drive from the airport, park the car and pitch a tent for the duration. Seems ridiculous to pay that much.
GyroRon

Chuck I will be there Sunday late afternoon if the trip down goes good - no traffic jams on I-95 and I-4 .... Yeah right! -
Doug I see what you mean. If you were coming on Sunday I would go out of my way to get you in Tampa, but by the time your flying down I will already be there. Glad your coming though. where were you staying? in a tent? Going to go by walmart and get one?
Chuck Irby

Thanx Ron. The way it's looking now, I'll be there late monday after a 700 mile drive.
