What do you use, How well does it work, will the helmet make a differance? I have a Sportys handheld and a comtronics open face helmet, My antenna is mounted on the bottom of my gyro and does have a proper ground plane ( so I think ) I fly in busy airspace so communication is very important, With all this I still have trouble hearing and being heard. What would you do?

Steven, What do you use for a headset, And thanks for the other good info, I am going to try and find a used radio first, where did you get your antenna and mount it. I understand mounting and ground plane are important. Dave

I have use king, icom 21,22 etc. First you need Punch. the rubber antenna dont work that well. The whip antenna soucks. You need a coild anthenna to be able to work the full frequency spectrum with out power gain. Remember you only have 1 watt.

Second the microphone. I bougth a helmet from flight suit in cajon california. But is pricei. around $1k wtih all what I wanted. Now comtronics have a good helmet but I prefer RAD.The intercome with the nosie gain and atenuation control is better. Price the same a buck or two less vs. Comtronics.

Dinamic microphones are good for nosie canceling but not good for clear voice transmition. If you use a hand hel no intercom in between and a military helmet go electrec. Also buy the leatter cover Oregon Aereo sells. Will give you 70 DB nose reduction.

Also if the earcups dont fit tight to your head the noise yuo are hearing is also transmited thru you mouth . "cel with ear pice" Any way this is what I have and I have flown MC's Rotax and Now Lycoming engine.
