Got word that Tim Verroi, Louis Hartzler, Starbee gyros, Jonathan Weis, are coming. will update with more as I hear of about it.

My idea of "camping" is staying at a Hampton Inn with no pool. But I've never been to a gyro event before so I am considering the ultimate in cheapness and tackiness --- sleeping in my car (but it IS a big Chrysler). Am I out of my mind or what. I have absolutely no camping experience and even if i DID borrow a tent from a friend I would probably kill myself setting it up.
I'm planning to get there Friday afternoon and stay until SAturday, so my question is -if I DO sleep in the car, should I buy a camping space to park my "tent on wheels"?
GyroRon
09-17-2005, 07:27 PM
Vince, I don't think you will be charged the 7 bucks for camping if your crashed out in the car Friday night. But if you are using the shower, and so on you probably should. It is only 7 bucks!
devon532
09-18-2005, 08:48 AM
You drive a hard bargain, Ron. OK..... In fact, I'll pay the $7 even if I DON'T take a shower!

Vince, they'll probably pay you $7 to go ahead and take a shower.

chapter 20 may have a few guys to show up. The big question is how's the weather up there? its 95 almost every day with 80% humidity. i am really looking forward to a change. i think i can handle living in a tent with a fan blowing on me. Ron, is there anything left for the boys with tents that want to use a electric hook up for a fan and a coffee pot? we have been talking it up, but i can't speak for my buddies. i think gary hall is going. i am real positive about me being there. i need it bad. we lost out on our last two fly in's. see you all there. :D
GyroRon
09-18-2005, 05:00 PM
Yes there is plenty of open camping spaces still left to choose from. Powered spaces are the same spaces no matter if you want to back a motorhome into it, or pitch a tent.... Heck some guys rent a powered space just to have a place to park their car and put out the lawn chairs on the flightline - the powered camping spaces are right on the taxiway and only maybe two hundred feet from the active runway -
I myself am planning to be there hopefully by Wednesday mid day through Sunday mid day. I am thinking about doing the motel thing this year instead of doing the tent thing, not sure yet, depends on if I can find one or two people willing to share a motel room with me to cut the costs in half or thirds... Anyone want to share a room at the Holiday Inn or Days Inn with me? The motels are less than a mile from the airport..... Let me know ASAP.
devon532
09-18-2005, 06:40 PM
Hmmmmm, let's see..... sleep in the car or share a room w/ Ron...... tough choice. Although the car seems the safer thing to do, I am willing to take a chance here. I can do it Friday and Saturday night, so if no one else can stand the entire 4 days with you, I can share expenses for those last two days with you (I think).
I better push the Post Reply button now before I come to my senses.
OldOneEye

My son and I have a room at the Days Inn for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nghts. The airport rate was $39.00/day.
GyroRon
09-19-2005, 08:17 AM
Cool then let's do it Vince. Anyone else game on sharing a room? At 39 bucks a night split 2 or 3 ways it will be pretty affordable!
Mister old one eye.... could you give me the phone number to the days inn? I am too lazy right now to look it up.
I usually look forwards to camping out on the field, but this year I am going to be so busy with work that the time saved by not having to spend a half a day setting up camp and a half day tearing it back down is worth the money spent on the room. Plus the room has A/C and or heat - you never know which one you will need at ROC!

chapter web site, Ron you being the wheeler for deals . You forgot to first call the airport at :
Call the Aiken airport for special Hotel/Motel rates available through the airport at (803) 648-7803 (spoke with nancy)
I dont know how much this will save if you call on your own compared to the airport discounts, or if its even for the motels you might want. The wife likes the holiday in express now its called the quality inn....
as we have stayed at almost all the places there and think that it was the best bang for the buck. Not the cheepest but at least the room was in good shape. Also had a good continental breakfast in the lobby area too.

 BOY OH BOY, now i'm asking myself what if  . what you said make's a guy think about how bad he wants to rough it. i plan on getting there tuesday so i guess i'm going to play it by ear on the camping thing. i'll need all that money to play in the gyro. it takes alot of rpm to hold up 300 lbs. that 14 hr. drive ain't cheap either and thats one way. you know you got to pay to play, but it's worth it. :p

I hope everyone that can and is able to camp, camps! Our chapters only way of securing funds for the following year is made off camping spaces rented during ROC.
Saying that, I totally understand why some would rather do the motel thing... warm bed, cool room, secure place for your belongings, DRY bed in the case of any rain - is certainly possible that we could have a rainy day or night during ROC, and I am still shaken by the experience of having absolutely EVERYTHING soaked from that thunderstorm that blew through Bensen Days this spring -
In my case, I love to camp on the field. This year though I will be flat wore out from next weeks work, and I am going to even be working for a few days in the early part of the week after before I can make the drive down to ROC. The last thing I want to do is have to set up my carports and tent and all the other crap I set up when I camp out, and then have to tear it all back down on Sunday. Normally I have that whole week off and I don't mind, but not this year, So the motel room idea has very strong appeal. Plus since the rooms are that cheap, if I split the cost with someone or two someones, it is with-in my budget.
For you diehards out there, or penny pinchers, camping on the field is the way to go.... 7 bucks a night with no power, or 12 bucks a night with, and the powered spots are prime sites where you can watch all the flying action from in front of your tent or motorhome.
Sounds like this years ROC is going to be a good one!
StanFoster
09-19-2005, 05:05 PM
Ron: Now you are thinking like me. :D When I came down to Bensen days ...it was far cheaper for me to fly commercial....than lose 3 days of stairshop time. I thoroughly enjoyed myself to the last minute....then just a short 2 hour flight back home...
Stan

If I could really rough it and sleep in a sleeping bag in the back of my truck - like Brent Brown - or in a small dome tent - like many others, it wouldn't take long to set up camp or break down camp. But not me.... I got 2 10x20 foot carports to put together, a 16x8 foot 10 person tent, Air mattress to blow up, tables and chairs to set up, TV, DVD player, Food, Snacks, luggage, lighting, trash container, and so on and so forth.... Then I got to take all that stuff and pack it back up Sunday Morning which is a pain since everything is usually wet from the morning dew.....
Yes this year it will be worth the extra cost of a room to save the time of setting up camp!
Phil_Ruffin
09-19-2005, 05:40 PM

Another reason to hit roc is that it may be the last "affordable" fly in to go to. Fuel prices are hovering about the arm and leg prices now and who knows what next year will bring. I hope lower prices but just think ROC is the last big fling for 05 in the southeast. You just gotta make it!!
All we need to do is pray for good weather and blue skies.

I do stick to my opinion that it is more fun to camp out than do the motel thing, you miss out on some late night and early morning fun times when your not staying on the field.

HEY GYRO BROTHERS,
 Its a sad day for alot of us at my job. I know i had said I was giong to make the trip to ROC--but as of today, at 12:00 noon-- my plant is shutting down. It blew alot of us folks away. some of us just wasn't expecting it. I am in a position that may get me a job at another plant- but there are so many other people out there that have better qualifications and are much younger than i am.
I am a planner and a material / service expediter for my plant and curently fluent in SAP, but i'm not old enough to retire----so, here we go again. looking for another income to hang on to before retirement.
whats really a bummer is that another huricane is approaching our coast. whew! all i can do is be greatfull for the time i had at this location and the fun i had training with all the gyro nuts like myself.
don't feel sad for me because there are so many other people over here that is in worst shape that i am in. God Bless Them.
sorry ron --- i so much wanted to be there and see all you guy's again and not to mention ----seeing where you learned how to fly. i love all that ,that has to do with gyro flying and enjoy those that struggled to get where i am at. its the best thing mechanical that i have ever learned how to do.
if there is a way ----i will be there. i will let you know. :)

Bob sorry about the job thing. It just sucks to be working somewhere and to just have the doors close on you out of the blue like that. It happened to me once - no comparison to yours - back when I was 17, I worked at a family owned pizza joint as a driver, and we outsold Dominos and pizza hut. It was a very fun place to work and we all made good money. One Saturday night about 3 hours before closing time, they said to help ourselves to all the food we wanted and to make as many pizzas and sandwiches we could fit in our freezers at home cause they were closing down for good that night. The owners of the business had hired someone to manage the place so they could have some time off, and the manager had stolen so much money by the time they figured it out that they couldn't stay open. It sucked.
I have faith in you Bob, and feel certain things will work out. Probably for the better.
I spoke with Todd Powell on the phone today about your post and we both agree, you really should go to ROC now. If you start a new job you might not have a vacation allowance for a while... so get your gyro fly-in fix now while you can! :) As for the storm, hope it turns North and comes here to the carolinas, we are dry to the bone here, haven't had any rain since Katrina blew by us.

Bob: I never got to talk to you at Bensen days...but it always pleases me to see people like you having so much fun. It looked like you really flew your Air Command quite well.
Believe me.....this bit of bad news will just open another door. Challenges make life interesting....but not quite understood at the moment. It will work out for you for the better.

Well Guys,
You got me thinking about what you said and your right about the vacation thing. If I don't make this one---I may not get another chance to make a big fly-in like ROC or BENSEN DAYS for a good long time. You know I'll be sleeping in a tent now--ha-ha. Got to make all the money work just right.
:) Thanks for the up beat dialog- it help me alot. I guess I'll see all you gyro nuts at the ROC. BOB

Ok i have to chime in here,I won't be makeing it,family problems, anyway the times I have gone and camped i had the most fun,you really miss alot when you do the motel thing.so great to wake up to the sound of a gyro for an alarm clock, walk down the flight line and smell the coffie brewing, and i am not much of a coffie drinker, but i always drink some at the fly in when offered. the people that show up are some of the best people in the world, and you truely don't get the full adventure unless you camp out,I have slept in my old subaru one year and my four runner another.if there was a way I could be there this year I would but it's not going to happen this time.

There has been in the past.
I think they charged about 7 bucks a night.
Airport personnel request that they store it and retrieve it.
(Fixed wing owners don't want rotor blade nicks on their aircraft.)

Just got some disappointing news from the FSDO in Charlette. They said they would not extend my testing area to the Aiken airport for that few days, Apparently they don't want to do the paperwork. a friend of mine - the guy in the next hangar over - was having all kinds of troubles and delays and bullcrap from the FAA regarding getting his RV-4 that he bought half finished and then HE finished registered and then inspected for airworthiness. They were giving him the run around for months, till he called one of these two people he and I know at the Charlotte FSDO and within a couple of days not only was the matter cleared up, but the guy came out and did his airworthiness inspection and as a added bonus, gave him a test area nearly double in size of the standard area.

Weather...... yes It was nice yesterday when I got here. Tim Verroi was first gyro in the air - flying sideways, hovering, pedal turns, blade overs, zero ZERO landings ;) this guy is good! -
Last night the rain came, and it rained all stinking night:(
Today it has off and on rained, but not more than for a few minutes at a time. Tim and I both were up in our Dominators just a little bit ago, and we will be going back up shortly.
Weather is supposed to improve tomorrow, Saturday is supposed be pretty nice, Sunday is forecast to be clear and sunny. ROC is beginning to be more RAIN over Carolinas than Rotors....
Ray Pierce, Tim Verroi, Maxie Wildes, Kevin Fogleman, a fellow from Alabama with a RAF, and StarBee gyros is here with machines, others are here with cars or trucks. Expecting a few others later today who are in route.
Yes it is wet and that sucks, but we got plenty of shelter for wne it does rain, and like I said the rain is off and on and it is only for a few minutes at a time at this point with forecast expecting improvments. Don't let the forecast scare you away or else you miss out on a good time. Remember that the fly-ins are 90 percent talking and only 10 percent flying and we got plenty of dry periods to fly.
Hope to see everyone here over the next few days.

Why its raining now I dont know why. I waited all year, I was a good boy ! I brushed my teeth and zippered my fly. A silver tarp hangs over my pride and joy. We hoped we prayed we still showed up. We arrived yesterday thru the rain and the wind.
But that tropical storm's doing ROC IN !!!!!
So we will smile and grin with our friends for a while. And wait for the sky to give us some sun. And when it stops raining we will go have some fun ! We'll whirl and we'll twirl we'll bank in our turns, our rotors each one we will take to that sky that calls us each day as soon as that rain sails off and away !!

I don't think I'll make it. Forecast for Copperstate tomorrow: No clouds for 200 miles, temps in the mid 90s (finally!!)

This year's Copperstate wasn't about the gyros, but considering how often there was at least one in the pattern (always!!), you would think it was. Good job guys. I know you answered a lot of questions and burned a lot of gas, at least until the wind came up and I left. It's been so long since I was at Casa Grande I wasn't sure how to get there by road, so I followed a Sparrowhawk. New aviation term: IFS or is it IFG? ( I flew down in the Chevy Silverado, had to go IFR all the way.)
