Several people have emailed me and asked how I was progressing so I figured I would be lazy and make a post out of it.
As stated in a previous post; the weekend of the 4th my much awaited weekend of flying and introducing people to gyros turned into a non-stop cross country (truck) trip to get a new engine and alot of work.
Almost finished when the weekend arrived and I did not get any work done on the gyro. Strangely, I did not mind.. Lisa and I met some long time friends and we took the Harley down to Red River Gorge Kentucky. We partied at night and repelled off cliffs and went spelunking in local natural caves.
I was worried that I would be thinking about the gyro all weekend and would not enjoy the trip but all it took was about 20min of driving through the hills on my bike and I was good-to-go for the rest of the weekend.
I did look at my sectionals (yes I took them camping with me  ) and found a local county airport with avgas. As we hiked across ridges I looked for places to land .... and decided I will have to wait until I have a gyro with a certified engine.. sigh.
Today, I went to the hangar after work. I finished installing the new RAF solid state ignition. I turned the key and......
Runs great.
I will put the prop on and start tuning tomorrow ( I hope ). I wont get any work done this weekend because it is Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio.
Other than the warnings of many early failures of the RAF ign I was also concerned about the Subaru coil pack. The cables do not seem to fit snugly and I doubt would be safe under wind and vibration. Pictured is my first attempt at a solution to this problem.
