View Full Version : T-Shirts - Your Ideas are needed

ToddP

Phil Ruffin has offered a great deal on getting some t-shirts made up for the forum. Bensen Days is rapidly approaching and I'd like to get them made up to give a few away at the banquet. I plan to send a few to each of the big fly ins and also to use for promotions or contests here on the forum.

The shirts will have 2 - color printing and the front left chest will have the name as it appears at the top of every page here plus the web address:

Rotary Wing Forum
A Meeting Place for Rotorheads
rotaryforum.com

What I need are ideas for the back. I'm thinking some type of cartoon type character cruising along in a gyro. Or maybe just a great saying. "Gyrocopters - For those who really want to fly" (just a saying - not great ;) )

In fact this will be our first contest for a shirt. Whoever can come up with the winning design or saying gets a t-shirt.

Contest Ends Friday at Midnight. Lets get Crackin'

How about Dr. Bensen in a Bensen Machine, on the back, for BD Days. Just a thought. MJ :)

I found a couple different graphics. The first one is exactly what I had in mind, but its from the Global Eagle Project. It looks like it is from the ministry of Defence website: http://www.mod.uk/aboutus/defence_matters/gyro.html

It might be difficult to get permission. C'mon, there has to be some artists in our ranks. Does anyone want to try their hand at something similar.

MJ I like your idea, but the shirts will be used throughout the year hopefully at several events.

I also think the person with the most posts - hint hint hint ;) - should get a bone throwed this way... How about a freebie Todd!

Todd, You said you were looking for a cartoon type graphic, here is an example of a graphic I did for Bensen Days last year, only sold about 20 of them before I quit working and started playing. I changed the words on it to reflect the forum. Is this something like what you are looking for?

Keep in mind I don't want to print something that belong to someone else without permission.

We've got some great ideas coming in. I've always loved the road warrior picture, but copyright is an issue that would probably be more work to overcome than its worth. Any of the pictures would require permission.

I really like the one you did for Bensen Days. What is everyone's preference. Personally I would rather have some kind of catchy saying on the back and keep my little bit of advertising on the front left chest.

Ron, it depends can I fly your phantom next time I'm down? 8)

Lets keep 'em coming. Lets see some more original artwork!

Gotta put " My gyro kicks your gyros Butt" across the back in bold letters under the pic

GyroRon

Or you could do one with this pic and say something like " I pity the fool who fly with fixed wings " or something???

Dude 701 posts! I gotta get a shirt or a bumper sticker or something for this! I thought you were sending McDonalds Gift certificates? Come on Todd!

Btw your more than welcome to fly my Phantom next time your down this way. I will have it at Bensen Days if you get a wild hair up your butt to fly down for a few days.

Ya know Ron, you could take that picture and download it on your computer and the print it in reverse onto a sheet of iron-on transfer paper. I have done some shirts like that, works fairly well, and real cheap for one off stuff.

I wanted to make a bumper sticker back in early 2003. I asked the question on the forum and here is what I and others came up with:

Gyro Pilots do it without stalling.

Gyro Pilots do it with a 24 foot rotor.

Gyro pilots do it with centerline THRUST and LARGE horizontal STABS.

Gyro pilots sit on it and autorotate

Gyroplanes . .. the best seat in the house!

1 - Think motorcycles are fun? Fly a Gyro!!!!

2 - See no Stab, Speak no Stab, Fly no Gyro

3 - (my favorite) - - GYRO'S-

Get - Your - Rotor - Obsession - Satisfied

gyro pilots do it in autorotation

That is all I got. After these it turned into a thread about steve mcgowan's kidney stone....

GyroRon
03-09-2004, 09:38 AM
How about this one...... Baseball, Football, Soccer all use one ball - Gyroplane flying uses two! Big ones at that!!

Chuck Irby
03-09-2004, 10:08 AM
Ron, I like it. However, I would change it to read as follows:

Baseball, football, soccer, etc... These sports require only one ball.
Flying a gyroplane requires two large ones.

This is a really tasteless idea that popped into my head, but I just had to share it anyway. How about Alfred E. Newman looking out from a stabless RAF just beginning to bunt over with "What, Me Worry?" in caps on the top. Or maybe Alfred should be a caricature on Don LeFleur?

I wanna take some pictures of Ron to print on my T-Shirt. Posing like Eric Estrada! ;D

Ten reasons to fly Gyros:

1. You can't hear your wife while flying
2. More challenging than Cessna, Piper, SkunkWorks
3. More Maneuverable than a CropDuster
4. When Flying, People look at you like your naked, and you like it
5. If you flew naked, people wouldn't notice.
6. More addictive than "Crack"
7. You can get in....The trick is getting out!
8. You met Ron Awad
9. You met Murphy
10. You can't hear your wife while flying

I agree it would be a great shirt.

Ron,

Ok, I am no attourny hell I can't even spell it but I do know alittle about fair use.

Option 1. we can find out the copyright status of that peticular photo. Perhaps the person who posted it could tell us where it was copied from. If the MGM copyright does not cover it ( which can happen ) then it could be expired and we are good to go.

Option 2. Fair use allows artistic reproductions and chariatures. ( sorry about the spelling I am in a hurry ). So if someone were to say redraw ( trace ) it out in pencil or ink then we scanned it then the reproduction would be in fair use. You could also use a photoshop filter on it to modify it but that might be getting close to infringment unless you add something to indicate artistic modification.

GyroRon
03-10-2004, 04:31 PM
I can't see any mention of the movie or the Actors or anything in that picture. I just don't see it being a problem. It is not like we will flood the malls across america with hundreds of thousand Road Warrior t shirts. I doubt Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears will wear them on some mtv show ----------- That I can't watch anymore cause Dish network pulled their channels because dish network is too cheap to pay them a fair rate increase ---------- which would cause Road Warrior T shirts to be the next fashion craze and then Poor Todd and Phil would get sued for countless millions of dollars. Ok I will go take a chill pill.

Todd if they did sue you, you could alway settle the suit by paying with a few of these.....http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/fakemillion1.html

Lets just put together a copy of the MADMAX picture.
Find some clothes that match the pic, get one of Ron's gyros after he has flown it (don't they end up looking just like the picture ?)
and hell .... we can even put the clothes on Ron, and use him as the crash-test-du.... I mean pilot !!

Why don't you try to get a photo of that dude in rode warrior for your T Shirt? Every one should recognise him or at least they will wonder where theey saw that.

barnstorm2
03-11-2004, 09:02 PM
Ron is right the picture is very cool and sticks with you.

I doubt we would get in any trouble at all but in Todd's shoes I know I would not want to deal with the potential hassle.

We could make our own, that don't say Rotary Wing Fourm. I will still want to get a RWF T but if I wear the same shirt every day at Bensen days then no one will want to be in a gyro with me ( even if it is open-cockpit! ).

Anyone know how much the ink-jet t-shirt transferr sheets are and if they are any good?? If they are I will print some out for us.

Recommendations?

Hey Guys, Sorry if this pops any bubbles but I am unable to print any type of photo real prints at this time. I can do it but time is short and I am not able to put to much time into it.

I have a manual press, it is very very hard to get any kind of consistent quality on a manual press doing photo real prints.

Besides, the time involved in doing the separation of this type of art, even for an automatic press is more than I have.

The price I quoted Todd was not for this type of printing. I am printing these shirts at cost, no one else will do this I am sure. So lets try to keep it Simple, classsy and appealing.

I also like the photo of the road warrior dude but to do this print as a photo I will have to buy special supplies and they are not cheep.

Please try to keep this in mind and come up with something that has a hand drawn look and not photo real. It doesn't have to be a cartoon look though.

Time is getting the best of us so if Todd wants shirts and still wants me to do them I need something to work with soon. I shoud have them printed by the 27th so I can be sure to get some in the hands of Steve McGowan. Todd would like some to go to Bensen Days as door prizes and give aways. Steve usually leaves a week or so early.

Thanks, Phil

Phil_Ruffin
03-13-2004, 11:27 AM
Sorry guys, didn't mean to cut the conversation short.....All I'm saying is to do photo real will cost more than I quoted to Todd for price. I am attaching a graphic I worked on of the road dude. It is not photo real but gets the point across.

I work in the industry producing graphics for sale to the public. We produce over 1200 pcs. of art a year.

As far a copyrights with art and photos, We were always told if you change the art 33% if was free to use. We had our attorney come in to discuss legal conditions with us not to long ago. He say this is not true, if you can tell what it is you can't use it.

I don't know about the limitations to time frame and what have you.

But, no more shirts that is going to be printed I don't think anyone is going to chase you down and interragate you as to where the shirt came from.

I can print this type of graphic at no extra cost to Todd.

What do you think?

Chuck Irby
03-13-2004, 11:39 AM
Phil, I like it.

Phil,

I like it to. Was that done with a photoshop filter?

Phil_Ruffin
03-13-2004, 02:23 PM
Yes it is a Photoshop file, I applied a Graphics Pen filter to the photo.

If Todd wants to use something like this I would put a little more time into it to make it more printer friendly.

I'd play with the curve values, levels, and contrast a little to clean it up and try to get more detail if possible.

ToddP
03-13-2004, 03:21 PM
Phil,

It looks fantastic. Lets use it. Do you guys want the Roadwarrior guy by himself on the back, or do you want the text:

I would personally like one with the Rotary wing forum logo on the front kinda small like 3 or 4 inches across with just the road warrior guy on it only no added words or anything.

Then I would like one with the rotary logo still on the front and then with the Steve McGowan face in there saying watch out it will bite ya or Got training or something silly that only Steve would say. These are exactly what I want. I will take one of each in XL and in white or red.

By the way the Mel Gibson character was the road warrior, what was the gyro guys name in the movie? I got the tape here I guess I could watch it and find out.....

You have to shink it and crop it down to 100x88 pixels ( it might take up to 100x100, Todd? ),

Then post it on a web site somewhere and add it to your profile.

If you tell me which one you want done I can reduce a photo and upload it to the PRA34 web site so you can add it to your profile.
