Ed Newbold here. For some reason I've just discovered the Rotary Wing Forum. Duh.

Anyway, my ratings include:
Commercial Helicopter
Commercial ASEL, CFI, CFII and advanced ground instructor

But, I'm 60 and for some reason it's nearly impossible to find work as a 60 year old pilot.

I love dancing, tennis, computers, R/C airplanes and helicopters, and darned near everything else in life (like, who doesn't).

Am going to start building a gyro this summer and will be seeking lots of advice from forum members. Am currently flying my Varieze N42XP hangared at Newark-Heath airport (VTA) just East of COlumbus, OH.

I'm also an active member of the Air Disaster forum, where there are MANY colorful personalities of the aviation community (http://www.airdisaster.com/forums/).

I look forward to many pleasant discussions with folks here.

Thanks everyone, for the kind words. I do have hopes of adding gyro CFI to my ratings, probably early next year. Gotta learn how to fly the things first <smile>.

Anyone know where the nearest gyro CFI is located?

Welcome to a great new beginning. Think about getting your gyro rating, Ed. We need you. You could be one more CFI that's closer to home for that want to be trained student. Good luck in picking the right one for you.

Hi Ed

Glad to see some other's that are in my age group (64) and have a interest in the gyro. If you are new to gyro's and want to get a super introduction to the sport and your time and schedule will permit then going to the PRA National in Mentone, Indiana this year is a must. It is in July from the 20th to 23rd, hope to see you there and talk gyro's

"You'll find a lot of colorful personalities on this fourm as well."

I know we have some loonies, "poofs," crazies, tall-story-tellers, B.S.-ers and so forth here, but I don't recall even one "colored folk," let alone "a lot of" them.

Ken,
Can't you just see the beet red faces as some of these posters are typing their posts? That may qualify as colorful.

Thanks for the heads-up, Tony. I've just put those dates on my calendar! I will definitely be there, and I'm going to being alone a couple of our EAA Chapter 402 guys who want to learn about gyrocopters. One of them is already actively seeking a RAF 2000, but I suggested he get a lot of training in one first.

Hey, between you, Tony and me, perhaps we can start a sub group and call ourselves the "COB Flyers". (COB= Crusty Old Bas....) :D

Tell your EAA friend to look into the Sparrowhawk and not the RAF. Sparrowhawk is bigger inside and better built and safer.

Ed,

There used to be an instructor in Hamilton, Ed Alderfer but he has retired from instructing. I took lessons from Gary Goldsberry in Indiana ( http://www.chapter34.com ) and suplimented them with training from Steve McGowan and training rides at Mentone and Benson Days.

I now hold a Private Pilot Rotorcraft, Gyro and plan to at some point become a SPI, although I don't plan on taking any students unless I get get a 2-place suitable for training in and I don't have the $$ for that now.

I would think Gary is your best bet.
