View Full Version : Not bending the axle tubes?
I was going to order the drilled round tubing package from Starbee but before I did I shot an email off to them asking them if they could bend the axle tubes for me. They replied that they don't bend the tubes and fly with them straight and don't have any problems! What do you think about this idea?

My axles have the offset inserts in them so the axle tubes didn't have to be bent. The wheels still lean in a little at the top. I wouldn't want to have straight axles and no inserts.
Does StarBee provide their axles with the inserts?

I meant to say the wheels lean OUT a little bit at the top.

Ralph has a nice pictorial writeup on his site HERE (http://taggart.glg.msu.edu/gyro/dejavu6.htm) about this issue. It's an interesting read.

Hmmm.... for me it came down to wanting the a/c to *look* like a 'bee.
I wouldn't have thought you'd have too much difficulty finding some shop with pipe-bending equipment, and it's not exactly a time-consuming process for them.
cheers,
John
Hmmm, I'll have to look into how to do it at home...
Alan, where did you get the offset inserts?

Kevin,
I bought my 'Bee as a project someone else had started, and the axle inserts were part of the deal. I'll look in the stack of receipts he gave me and see if I can find where he got them.
If I was going to get axle tubes bent I'd check with an electrician. The electricians here where I work have a power conduit bender that would do the job nicely.
The muffler shops around here don't seem to have a small enough mandrel to do the job.

Guys, if you have a race car chasssis shop of any kind (circle track, drag & etc.) in the area, just go there and get the bend(s) done right!

I supplied offset inserts with the AEROTEC kits. I don't know if Starbee continued with that idea. I swiped the notion from the similiar fittings you see on U.L. planes and trikes.
Bends in structural tubes bug me, on any aircraft. Just a personal eccentricity.
