Paul,

Does your friend Chum knows about the dangers of not flying with a centerline thrust?

Ramón

Ramon, he sure does.

Chum has been a good familly friend and has done his training with me. Chum has been ballast for most of my Firebird testing.

We are half way through the VCoG measurement on his gyro today. I had to come home and get another pulley. Too much weight for my electric winch without a brake, so I will have to gear it down through some pulleys.

A number of people have said that it is a high thrust line machine. It certainly doesn't fly like a high thrust line machine. The Hirth gearbox is under the heavier Subaru ej-20 engine crank, the prop is only 68" diameter, electric pre rotator, the keel is stepped, but only 2 1/2".

Tonight I should know where the VCoG is, and will report.

Quite a number of people said that my hybrid was not CLT. My flying it told me it was and now the measurements with the drooped rotors says it is close enough to be called CLT.

Better go and get these pulleys organised.

Cheers Aussie Paul.

Well as usual things did not go quite according to plan. I took a number of pics and found 2 that I could use reasonable well. I will have to measure the gearbox etc tomorrow but I believe the thrust line to be between 2" and 4" above the VCoG.

I will tomorrow have to get a long ladder to attach the pulleys at the apex of the workshop. The fluro line that I hung as a vertical guide is not quite clear enough.

Anyway, I got a reasonable estimate of the VCoG, and now have to fine-tune the system again.

I promised a report so there it is. Not quite as close as I hoped but certainly close enough with an effective h/stab. Another step in the keel is probably all it will take, if we decide that it needs improving further.

At this stage it flys quite well.

Cheers. Aussie Paul.
In the picture it looks like if the CLT is above Chum's head!!

The propeller does look like it's pretty high in relation to the pilot, but that big heavy engine is above the propeller, which raises the CG up a lot closer to the thrustline than it would appear.

Kevin King
Charles Town, WV

Ramon, As I have mentioned before I think, it does not matter where the thrust line is in relation to anything else BUT the VCoG.

If Chum was not so short the seat would have been slightly higher.

Chum had built the airframe before I has done a lot of my testing. I would step the keel a little further on the next one.

Imagine how bad it would be if we followered most of the Oz manufacturers, and had the gearboxed reversed!!!!!!!!!

There are still so many machines still being built with 7" to 13" high thrust line offsets!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find solace in the fact that I am now seeing more Oz gyros being built with the g/box below and therefore arriving much closer to CLT.

I must be getting through to a few. It is the next generation of gyro pilots whao are building at the present time that will help our "bad safety record industry."

Aussie Paul.

Hey Ron,

Nice picture of your girl friend. Next gryo you get, you need to paint her on the nose or tail. The gyros nose or tail!. ;D

Don

Oh yea, I almost forgot...

All,

The reason that Ron is smiling in this picture, he just nearly took me out with his R/C. *HAHA! *You missed! *:P

Don
You should see that R/C now! I gutted the old direct drive electric motor and prop, and put in a high powered electric with a 3 to 1 gearbox and huge master airscrew prop. It will climb like crazy now! ;D

for sure the last try, American Choppers is on, must have to be an RGB file, Chris never did want to fly alone....

Phil,
You would have to give that EA81 a fair tickle behind the ears with the whip.

Todd,
A wife and four daughters !!!!!!!!! - My God. No wonder you go out flying.
