Well went to Lumberton yesterday, Flew my gyro and a friend followed me in his Phantom Ultralight. We had a bit of a headwind going both to and from the airshow, and the route we flew was just under 100 miles each way. The entire flight both ways amounted to almost exactly 4 hours! But it was huge fun!!!

I was the only gyro there and of course it drew a huge crowd of people. I did my best to tell people what why and how a gyro flys and where to get some lessons. I did a demo flight later in the afternoon and had alot of people afterwards come up and tell me they were impressed, and wondered why they don't see more gyros after seeing what mine could do.... I told them, it is cause most people don't take the time to learn what makes a gyro tick and that most people are confused into thinking a gyro is a complicated and high maintance machine. I told him once people see how simple it really is it is hard not to want one....

Anyway the fly in was great. I have never been to Sun-n-Fun but was told this is just like it only friendly and reasonably priced. Since I flew in I didn't go out of my way to pay a admission, Not even sure if they were charging pilots that flew in. So don't know how much it costed to get in, But bottled waters or Canned sodas were only a dollar and the Hotdogs we had for lunch were HUGE and were only 2 bucks with all the chilli and trimmings you could pile on them.

There was a few good aerobatic displays. A set of 4 T-6's doing a formation aerobatic routine. They were cool cause they were really low doing their stuff and those props make a wicked noise! There was a Old Twin Beech with Radial engines doing a loop and roll routine, again very cool. A old Jet doing fly bys - think it was a Sabre something or other? A Harrier Jump Jet doing fly bys and a hover and spin in front of the crowd. Several Pitts and Yaks Routines, a Jet Truck, A Jet PortaPotty, a Jet ATV.... You name it, it was there. Late in the afternoon they had a B-17 Bomber with a escort P-51 Mustang doing fly bys, followed by a P-40 and another P-51 I think. Really cool to see those birds flying by.

I was surprised on how many people were there. It was aLOT of planes and tents, and Campers, etc.... Seemed like alot of people brought their Golf Carts or scooters or ATVS and they were welcomed to ride them around the place. That would have been nice cause it was really spread out over alot of ground.

Anyhow, it was really cool and the people behind the fly in are shooting to make it a replacement for Sun-n-Fun since people are tired of the ridiculous prices there.

I will post some pices. My camera sucks so sorry that some of the pics are not too good.

Here is some various pictures from the ultralight area. Yes we were outcasts, they set up the ultralight area as far away from the main area you had to catch a bus to go over to the main area. But the flip side was it was not as crowded and we had a nice large area to expand for next year if we wanted.

Main Flightline as viewed from the Ultralight area. Then a few pics of the Harrier jet Hovering.

How about this Phantom - the guy on the right is the Owner of Phantom aircraft - with a 40 horsepower Rotary engine on it? He started it and ran it for me and Shane - the guy I flew there with. It sounded great and smooth. He couldn't fly it since the airspace was closed for the airshows.

The last Picture is Randy Berry, Chapter 13's Vice President.

Ron: Cool pictures. It still amazes me how misunderstood and unknown gyros are. I still get tickled at the reaction most people get when you say the rotor isnt powered.

I was at the local coffee house not long ago and a guy was eating a hamburger. He was telling me he hears me flying about every other day and what would I do if that engine quit. I told him the rotor wasnt powered and it would just come down and land like a crow. He looked at me with that RCA dog twist to his head.....and stopped chewing. It was so funny..then bits of hamburger and bun were spit to the table as he said..."What do you mean its not powered?" Talk about being more red necked than Larry the cable guy.... :D

I just about lost it.....and then he slapped me on the back and said..."Stan..you pulling my leg again"

If I would have said the rotor wasnt powered 100 more times...he still would never believe me.

So I think I will invite him out to the airport sometime and show him my pre-rotator drive and clutch. I mean....thats the only way that rotor will turn according to him. :D

We had a bit of a headwind going both to and from the airshow.

And I walked uphill both ways to school... in the snow... all year round before global warming... (BSEG)

Anyway the fly in was great. I have never been to Sun-n-Fun but was told this is just like it only friendly and reasonably priced.

Ron and guys, I am told that the Lumberton fly-in was started by Billy Henderson and other former insiders at Sun-n-Fun, who were crowded out by the current management, before the break with EAA.

I don't know if that's true but that's what I heard.

I have great fun at Sun-n-Fun regardless, but as a press guy I don't have to pay the rapacious admission. On the other hand, I have to work and can't just hang out with the gyro guys!

cheers

Flying back home.....

Last one shows I was representing the Forum with my Rotaryforum.com Shirt on! - the wire going down my shirt was plugged into a Portable CD player I plug into my headsets so I can listen to some music while flying.... Had LL Cool J's great hits for the ride down and Hootie and the Blowfish for the ride back!

Ron,
I know how you feel about being the only gyro at a flyinn.
I attended an FAA family day flyinn at Baton Rouge airport in 2001.
They thought I was a helicopter so they parked my RAF in line with:

LA State Police Bell JetRanger
US Coast Guard Dolphin
US Marine Reserve Cobra
LA National Guard Blackhawk
US Customs Blackhawk
Acadian Ambulance Eurocopter AirMed
Hughes 500

Ron great pics, I was at south east airport today, checking to make sure I could fly a gyro there ok, and i got talking to a guy building an ultralight, and he was there yesterday and said he saw you fly.he was impressed.

and the Good news is I talk to the lady that owns the airport, she remembered me from when i worked there many years ago, and welcomed me with open arms to bring a gyro there when I get one.
so now i can relax about worrying about haveing a place to still fly one.
now to get My Scorpion helicopter sold.

Ron,
Did the Phantom have trouble keeping up with you?

Yeah kinda. I was cruising at 65-70 mph which is a average speed for the Dominator. I would have been able to go 75-80 quite easily, but he would have not been able to go that fast without really pushing it too hard.

I was running at average RPM of about 56-5700, he was around 58-6000 to keep up with me. His Rotax 503 burned about the same amount of fuel per hour as I did, I guess cause he was pushing it along harder than I was. His normal cruise speed is about 60 mph even.

Shane, the guy in the Phantom, had more of a blast than I did. He just started flying a few months ago. His machine only had about 5 hours on it since new when we left Goose Creek. This was his first Cross Country flight!

That might have been better than where I parked... or maybe not?

Had I flown in alone I would have landed on the main runway and would have parked with the other experimentals, but since I was slow in the pattern and there was a zillion planes coming and going, and also since I had a Ultralight with me I decided just to go to the ultralight area since that was the easiest.
