View Full Version : Suggestion for "Bio" page

Hi Todd, Mike and all.

I had a suggestion for the forum that might be of some value or interest. I know there's currently a "Welcome Mat" section, which is very cool. But it's usefullness is limited to the members & visitors already here. We know there's a new guy when someone introduces themself.

But new & future members just joining probably won't wade through all the introductory posts, which are growing in number over time (thankfully :D ) In the relatively short time I've been a forum member, I've become friends with a great many other members. But I often have to click on their avatars to refresh my memory sometimes... it's the Alzheimer's kickin' in

In brief, would it be possible to have an "About Me" button on member's Profile page that either:
A). Linked directly to their Welcome Mat post? Or perhaps easier:
B). Opens a pop-up window where Forum members can read a short Biography of those so inclined to write one.

I love the Welcome Mat section because it's a great opportunity to introduce yourself to existing members. But for new & future members trying to learn more about the existing members, it's not really backward compatible without doing a search. An "About Me" button on a member's Profile page just seems like a logical place to click on to read more about a particular member here. Obviously the button would be grayed-out (inactive) if no extended Bio was available. As usual, maintaining the bio is the member's responsibility.

Anyway, it was just a thought. A year from now I expect we'll be in excess of 2500 members. I'm just thinking ahead of ways that might make it easier for people to learn a little bit about each other.

Thanks,
Brian Jackson

Brian,

I just upped the allowable character limit in the 'bio' part of the user profiles.

Take a look at my profile, and see if this works for you. :D

Mike, You da man! That was option C I forgot to mention... (yeah, right). Best solution of all 3 :D

And he hasn't even reached the prime of his life. I've got another forum request. Is it possible to add a member search option to search for people by their real names?

Mike, Thanks for taking care of that.

Tim,

Click on the link for the member list. In the upper right corner is a button "search members". There is an option for "Advanced Search". This will bring you to a new page where you can search any field including "Real Name".

Let me know if you have problems.

I know very little about how an actual forum is coded, but this is something that I know *I* would find useful. It would be nice to be able to "flag" threads that are of interest, perhaps even posts. Consider them favourites or what have you, but I'd like to be able to isolate certain threads or posts that are of interest to me, but not necessarily active. Think of it like an e-mail filing system. There's a lot of knowledge and information available here, but sometimes I forget where I read it or if I even read it here!

Perhaps it's just a more user-friendly and personalized version of the 'search' command.

Often I will create a new folder in my browser's Favorites (bookmarks) menu and save links to various pages there. I rename the link something descriptive so I can access it quickly when needed. That's one way to do it.

At the top of every thread page there is a 'Thread Tools' menu. Select it and then 'Subscribe to Thread' for the threads you are interested in keeping track of.
