Tim,

Last year, I got over the "leave well enough alone" thing and made 2 changes on my 447.

I finally adjusted the trim spring. It used to be when I would relax on the stick the nose would drop. I pulled the spring about 1" and now it flies hands free at cruise.

Next, I noticed that I always seemed to be fighting the rudder and my ankles would get tired. I just thought that was the way it was. I bent the little aluminum tip of the rudder. Ooops too far! Second try was perfect. Now I hardly have to use any rudder pressure.

Give it a try, you might like it...

Chris,

I have played with my trim spring a bit. It is actually off a bit now but I think that has to do with the cold air flying. In the hot days of summer it seemed better trimmed.

The rudder trim is a differn't matter though. I don't feel like I am fighting the rudder while I am flying but as you can tell from the pictures my feet don't line up when I am flying straight. The metal strip on the back of my rudder goes straight back. Did you bend yours toward port or starboard?

Just judging from your pics Tim I would say bend the trim tab to the right when viewed standing behind the gyro. In your pics your holding a lot of left rudder to go straight. So if you bend the tab to the right the wind hitting it will push on it and that pushes the rudder left, same as holding the pedals to the left as you do. The goal is to adjust it to the point where you could take your feet off the pedals in cruise flight and the gyro will still fly straight. I wouldn't fly for long feet off, but if you get it trimmed that way it cuts down on your workload.

I don't know if this link will work for anyone but here is a shot at it:

Warning. This will take a while to download and the quaility is poor. My digital camera takes low-res 15 second mini movies ( no sound ) and I pieced them together into this.

Note: The file is too large to play off of the FTP site. Drag (download) to your computer before playing it.

Tim,

I think Ron is correct. Or at least, it sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

First, with your rudder pedals centered, the leading edge of the rudder should be 1" off center, to the right, from rear of the rear keel. This is to offset prop rotation I think. This is adjusted with your cables.

Air Command says to clamp 2 boards on the trim tab to bend it. I just used my hands. I noticed a difference as soon as I broke ground. Well worth the time to adjust it, just be careful and use small adjustments.

Well thanks Chris. It sounds like you might know a little something about it too. I think.

Did you see the link I posted to the mini Gas powered Harley I just bought on the Turd thread?
