View Full Version : "C" Gear Box Cover Bolts

I thought some of you might be interested in knowing this, unless I'm the only one who didn't know it already:

A while back, while discussing torque values, I mentioned that I had stripped the threads out of my "C" gear box. Yesterday, I was planning to remove the cover and install a helicoil. I was very pleasantly surprised when I removed the bolt from the hole in question. The attached photo is what I found.

As you can see, the bolt was stretched. The threads in the gear case were fine. I just assumed that when the bold would not tighten, that the threads in the aluminum gear box were stripped. I now assume that soft bolts were used by Rotax to prevent damage to the threads in the gear box in case they were over torqued. Pretty neat deal.
