Man, how I love my Butterfly. Flew solo this morning, nil wind. Took off and landed both ends of strip. Took off about 7.30 am and climbed to 350 feet, flew some tight patterns over flying the strip at 100 feet, then fifty feet, 20 feet. Then landed her. Awesome!

After a cuppa tea and good chat, out for another flight. I found myself at 50 knots and had no tail wiggle at all like Allan got. I flew straight and level at about 5700-5800rpm at 35 knots. After a few months of feeling a little apprehensive and thinking this might never happen, I was amazed at how totally relaxed and calm I was as soon as she left the ground. Granted I smiled to myself on first climb out and thought "Now all you have to do is get her down". It was such a magical experience. I was a little worried how I'd handle the altitude but I just love to fly and being up there on my own was fun and man what fantastic view.
To actually have been pilot in command of an aircraft and have done it in a craft such as Butterfly, has fullfilled a life time dream for me.

Geoff said first landing was text book, it felt great, felt right. Second time out I was back at 25 knots at 20 feet, added some power, kept the stick forward, picked up 30knots at about 5 feet, eased back the power, let her settle in and put her down. Not quiet as nice as the first, but both smooth and as Chris would put it "pretty much a non event."

Nil wind conditions will be all my flying for the next 15 to 20 hours. Well, I'll make no excuses for raving on, I'll be excited for weeks.

Getting some high resolution pics reduced so as I can post them. The pic below was taken after both flights, I still can't wipe the grin off my face.

I thought I was hooked on gyros, now I know it for sure.

Thanks to everyone on this forum, it's been a great place to learn and interact with members. Special thanks to , Allan Wardill, Geoff and Keith Jamieson and Larry Neal.

Fly Safe.

Mitch. :D :D :D :D

Who can shrink some high resolution shots for posting, I can email them to you. Cheers.

Congratulations!

That's a good looking machine, and you're looking pretty cool to have just made such a major step.

I wouldn't mind seeing a better photo of the VW sometime.

Fantastic, Mitch... Just the sort of thing we need to hear to keep us still-building-non-soloed people inspired. Way to go! :)

Mitch,
With two first solos in a week, we could "juice" you and Chris Wilson for EXHILARATION and sell it!!
Your comment about feeling so relaxed after lift off reminds me of Ken Wallis' comments on the History Channel: "...a gyro just feels so right when your flying it!" I hope I am still flying when I am 85!
Congrats my friend and I look forward to meeting you in person real soon!

Mitch,

I hope to make a similar post one day. For now, I'll just keep flying this keyboard. Send me your pics and I'll de-megabytize them for you.

Thanks Guys
Appreciate the comments. I'll be at Larry's in July, then on to PRA and up to OshKosh from there. Matt, really looking forward to it. Steve, thanks for the offer to de-megabytize. Apparently all things are possible after first solo flight, after two years of not knowing how to shrink them and relying on setting the camera to minimum size, I managed to crack the code. There you go! Enjoy, I did.
Cheers,
Mitch.

Hey Rob,
When are you heading back down under, will you plan a trip around the Nationals sometime? It's great to be up there Rob. Thanks.
G'Day Shawn,
Your videos are a great part of getting people happening, hope you can come on down and do some stuff for ASRA (Australian Sports Rotorcraft Association). Hey come to think of it I seem to recollect Rob giving me some tips on video camera filming whilst he was in Oz, I think you two guys have more than gyros in common. "way too Cool", like I have always said, " way too much fun to be legal."
Fly Safe,
Mitch.

Hi Tim,
Mate your FTP Server set-up has been my saving grace these last many months of not getting airbourne. I think the videos and pics keep us all going. Your pics are top shelf.
Cheers.

G'Day Chris,
Sounds like you know your way around the Butterfly range of craft. It is a joy to fly.
Have a good one.

Mitch.

Hey Ron A,
I seem to remember reading a post about you with bugs in your teeth or something like that. What is a baja bug? Now a Moreton Bay Bug, that's some good eating.
Glad to finally be flying and suffering the same addiction as the rest of you Fellas.
Fly Safe,
Mitch.

Mitch,

I'll be in the US for most of this year doing lots of gyro flying but will be back to Oz near the end of the year so I'll see you then. I hope to do a FW trip out to Birdsville, Longreach, and Birdy's place.

G'Day Gents.
Had three flights this morning, two in still air lasting around half hour each and getting up to 550 feet, last flight wind picked up to 10-15 variable and gusting, decided to cut it short (18 minutes) and landed across the strip into the wind. Another 55 mins will see my 3 hours of PIC :D and I'll have my gyro ticket. These pics were taken on the last flight.
Cheers,
Mitch.

G'Day Gents,
Now have a little over 5 rs solo, have my pilots certificate in hand and four flights in 15-20 knot winds, practicing vertical decents from 500 agl only been up to 590 agl, going a little higher each time and flying longer. This is way too much fun.
Have finished the Butterfly transporter, registered as a Caravan. All things being equal, will be arriving at Cooma, NSW for the ASRA Nationals and will be flying my Butterfly at the meet. I am very thankfull to all who participate on this and the Aussie forum, you make the journey easier to navigate, more enjoyable and rewarding.
Cheers,
Mitch.
