Has anyone tried a turbocharged Subaru engine in a gyro yet?
As far as one can see on car race web pages, turbocargers for Soobies are readily aviable. In fact, even some stock Subarus (Ex-xxT) are turbocarged.
While a bit heavier and somewhat more costly, it seems there is quite some advantage in using them:
- more peak power (some 30% more)
- less fuel consumption at nominal power (some 10% less)
- turbochargers are efficient mufflers
- steady power output up to rather high altitudes
The M160/1, a slightly modified car engine of only 698 cc (SMART by DaimlerCrysler, not yet sold in the USA), is said to deliver 80 HP between sea level and 8000 ft. (http://www.ecofly.de).
Decent power at high altitude is of some importance in a place that's surrounded be high mountains.
Any info on that? Is there any reason why not to use a turbocharged engine?
Thank you
