I Know You've got one, so let's hear what it is. Whats in the shop or garage for this winter?

For Me:
I'm not really happy with the throttle quadrant, or panel on my dominator. I'm going to replace the 2 1/4" Airspeed and Altimeter with 3 1/8" instruments. I may also take my exhaust off and get it ceramic coated, we'll see. The throttle quadrant just needs moved over to the left a little, right now it rides right against my left leg.

So there's my plans, how about yours?

Todd
This winter I plan on installing a Rotax 618, add a tall tail, brakes, redesign my throttle area and add a few things like the RAVE valve controller and a place to mount a GPS.

I may even do a new layout on my instrument panel. If I do I may be able to mount the GPS there and mount my radio in the throttle set up area.

I also plan on repainting the pod and tail with Camelian (spelling) paint that changes colors. I really like that paint.

Phil

I plan to finish and test fly "Da Screw-Driver" before years end weather permitting. Head with Ring Gear is on its way to me as I type along with prerotator and rotor brake.

I don't know about this winter, but I've just placed an order with Ron Herron @ Little Wing for a 2 place Long frame. I belive it is the LW-4.

Going to get this project started as I build hours in "Da Screw-Driver." Haven't made any other plans than the frame for now.
Major winter projects for my GyroBee:

1. Replace stock 5 gallon fuel tank with 10 gallon fuel tank from a GT400 fixed wing. This will involve modifying the engine mount supports and building a new fuel tank tray.

2. Replace all bushings in cyclic control system.

3. Replace pump handle cyclic pivot bracket.

4. Modify rotor brake.

5. Disassemble, clean, measure, and reassemble Rotax 503, the carbs, and B gearbox.

6. Replace stainless steel leading edge tape on Ivoprop, repaint blade tips, and rebalance.

Plus a list of about a dozen minor maintenance items.

John Landry
Olympia, WA

After I finish test flying my 2 new jet engines, :o *I plan to install a warp drive, test my new force field generator (which I borrowed from the USS Entrprise), and go to visit friends in other planets where the weather is warmer. *By the time I return, it should be spring and the weather will be nice again. *Oh, actually, with my new force field I can fly year round... Silly me *::)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/364496.stm

Udi

Udi,

Which Enterprise did you get the generator? Also, depending on your warp engines, I would recommend Risa for your warm weather excersions. I've never been to Risa, of course, but Commander Riker always seemed to look forward to going. I think he talked Pecard into going once and I heard he had a blast.

Watch out for Klingons around Uranis ;D

Udi,

Take the time this winter to get the STC'd modification for the warp engines allowing the use of automobile dilithium. It's a pain to install, but it'll save you a bundle next year.

I am going to finish building my RAF2000 that I just bought. It was a new kit in 2002 and the previous owner had a good start on it. I am now installing all the instruments. I have a Don Parham HS to put on it as well. It has about all the options and I figure it will take me most of the winter to finish building it.

Hey Steve,

Yes, the LW-4 is a 2 place long version 18ft fuse vs. LW-5 is a 2 place short version 16ft. fuse.

I haven't had a whole lot of luck finding prices on certified engines. I have seen alot of prices on ovrhauling certified engines. It is scary. Ive found some certified engines (used) in differant advertisments like Aerotrader, Ebay.

It looks like to me, a Hirth will cost 10k, a rotax close to 20k, that radial 15k.

I'm just exploring options right know, and if I find a cerified engine I can use for say around 5k. I'll pay for the overhaul which will put me in the ballpark of my above mentioned other options but with a 2000 hour TBO.

Is my thinkin off?

What do you think?

john-

Now its time.

After working two weeks on flight training for two new Gyro CFI's it's time to do much needed winter work. I am going to have Gordon (my A & P mechanic) rewire "Ruby" (my AAI modified RAF). We have lost our ability to communicate with the other local aircraft ( fixed wing ground schools) After flying two weeks in 35 degree weather it's time to stop. Talk about thick air. I think we were at about -1000 feet below sea level air density. The last day Scott had to help Matt hold "Ruby" on the ground or at least keep her in ground effect to get forward speed up to 65 before climing. Vanik's blades sure like to clime.

Anyway my list is
1. Full rewire to get rid of shorts.
2. Complete 200 hour inspection
3. Try to find cabin heat system. God it's cold flying in 35 degrees.
4. Yes! Yes! Set up build center at Boeing Field with tools and benches for building for our first SparrowHawk.
5. I have to take my FAA Private Pilot Gyroplane written exam. (I am not ready yet. Have just retaken ground school again for fixed wing and am having Scott T. help me with the gyroplane and rotocraft part) and Mat and David are also going through CFI ground school
6. Have to fly Santa on December 13 into Boeing Field and to the reception at the Boeing Filght Museun. Can I get "Ruby" put back together again? Can I get a CFI to fly Santa? Maybe, Maybe not. I don't want to have to rent a helicopter for Santa. Oh well maybe a good airplane will do.

Randy Coplen

I am truely in no hurry on this project. I definately want it done right. I have a gyro to fly and build hours as I build this one.

I have heard both good and bad stories on Subs. I can't get over the high price of a rotax. I think a 914 turbo is close to 20k. I've given alot of consideration to the Hirth F-30es fuel injected. Given the high cost of all, the radial appears to be in the running as well.

I saw on ebay a Rotax 914 block under a grand, but I have no idea how much would have to be poured into it to make it run. It had no carbs, no turbo, no nothing but the block.

I've also seen some certified type engines around the 5-6 grand range.

The engine will most likely be one of the last things I do on the project and I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to work it out.

I do like the novelty of the radial, the torque and horse power, the fact I don't need any kind of cowling, and the price really isn't that bad. I don't like the wieght 220lbs.

Who knows?

I can't wait to get a hold of the fuse and all for powdercoating, assembly, interior.

john-

With a foot snow on the ground, I think its definately time to start the winter projects. I was hoping to get a little more flying in, but nothing will keep the machine down too long.

It sounds like several others will also be very busy this winter.

John, I look forward to hearing how the little wing project comes along. Do you have any kind of estimated completion date? Next year...2 years, 2 weeks?

Sorry Todd,

Really don't know what will be involved. I already have some work that I am unable to do contracted out like welding, powder coating, covering and painting. Alot will depend on the assemblies I can get from Little Wing. If I can get all assemblies from Little Wing, all will go fairly quickly. If not, it will take much longer.

I'm shooting for no more than 2 years.

john-

My winter project.... I think I going to build another hangar to sell as I already have my own. Here in the next few posts I will attach some pics of the last one I built this past Jan and Feb.

Total cost of all supplies was 4500.00$ plus another 1000$ in rock to spread around inside and in front of the hangar. This one was built in a former pond - was a pond right before I started construction - and since it was so cold and wet this past winter I needed all that rock to keep the place from being a mud pit.

Anyway I have a lease on the land and it runs me 42$ per month and the hangar is 40 feet wide by 40 feet deep and at the front will clear a 14 foot tall aircraft. This past summer I had 4 airplanes and my gyro and trailer in there.

Ron,

I don't get it.

You'll build one hell of a nice hangar and knock it out in a few weeks but you won't build yourself a gyro? You could have built a gyro in the time it took you to build that hangar. Since the dominator is sold...why not?

GyroRon
11-24-2003, 11:31 AM
Why not? I couldn't buy the stuff to build one for what I can a buy a good used one for.

Rotorblades = 1500.00$
Rotorhead = 750.00$
pre rotator = 750.00$
Engine = 2500.00$ to 6000.00$
Prop = 400.00$
Seat tank = 300.00$
wheels and brakes etc... = 150.00$
basic instruments = 500.00$ to 1000.00$
Aluminum for airframe = 1000.00$ ?
Control stick and push rods etc.... = 500.00$
tall tail = 750.00$
what did I miss?
Grand total = 9100.00$ to 13,100$ and this would be a Bensen with a tall tail and either a Subaru or Rotax 582 engine.

I can buy a flying Subaru bensen type gyro for under 5 grand trailer and all.

I would love to build my own machine, believe me! But I just don't want to put 9-13 grand into a 5 grand machine. I know a gyro can be built for less, I suspect that with finding good deals on a used rotorhead, direct drive soob, used tank wheels and maybe instruments etc... A flying " new " gyro could be made for under 5 grand but then I still have my time invested.

Seeing the hanger being built reminds me of my own project. I have been building a house in my spare time over the last six years. This winter I start on the kitchen. *It has been just a sink, microwave and refridgerator. * Once I finish the kitchen then I will be done with the inside of the house. *then I have to start on the outside, trim, and stucco. *It is just paint on OSB right now. *The Wife has been great and has put up with a lot with very little. But the good thing is once we are done we will have a nice house that is compleetly paid for and no morgage. Out side of the water well and sewer we have done 100% of the work.

Once I finish with the House, my next project is to build my Hanger/garage/ workshop. *Maybe then I can start building my gyro.

got to finish this house, got to finish tish house.......... :P :P

Shawn

I just picked up my winter time project yesterday. Can't wait to get started! I will be prepping my new Magni M16 frame for painting this week. Hope to get it all painted by the weekend. Then to start on the fun part, the fuselage, wheel pants and the tail feathers. I have a real nice paint scheme picked out. I will be posting pics soon. Hope to be flying it by early spring 2004. I have 9 hrs training logged with Greg Gremminger so far. Love it. I am selling my two seat power parachute PC2000, if anyone knows of a retired person with a lot of time to wait for winds to die. Let me know. Ha Ha.... Anyway, I hope to meet a lot of the great people on this forum this coming summer.

Darren Twellman

I put off finishing the single place in lieu of having the tandem ready to go next Spring. I used the C.19 as a guide,(see pic) for looks and patterned the configuration accordingly,(sans Radial and winglets).....here's my URL if the clicky thingy doesn't work....

Hahahaha,...........Yes,Brent........even tho I have flown with Mike Solano, took lessons from Steve Graves in a Marchetti and John Potter, Walt Welch and Don Farrington ,(when I worked for Don),in the 18-A and countless hours flying fixed wings with my Father and other pilots, I truly haven't honed my flying skills well enough to jump into the single and fly it....

I really want to start fresh,(too much time gone by from flight lesson to flight lesson) and use my two place for training,(which would be ideal). The Tractor gyro isn't the same animal as the pusher and I want to learn the "nature of the beast" before venturing into the single place. This probably means taking flying hours in a regular gyro first as well as time in a taildragger...oh, well...Mike said he give me lessons as well as Bill DeVoust and Larry Neal....all have 2-places and are CFI's,BFI's and AFI's...and all are here in my area here in Texas.

The only items needed finished on the single is the fuel system,(I've built 3 tanks and all 3 would work but I want to have more positive fuel-flow and the location the tank resides now is sufficient but, I want more), re-installing the instruments in to the new panel and finishing up the tail section..and that's it........

I'll get there........LOL......like my "quote" says:
The Oxen are slow, but, the Earth is patient..!

It seems my "winter projects" have increased. I removed my old engine and took a good look at my gyro. I figured now is a good time to make some modifications that I have been thinking about. Well, one thing has lead to another and now I have redesigned the entire frame, suspension, etc. Following are some of the improvements I am making:

Move the HS and twin rudder back 6" (longer lever arm to improve stability).

Increase legs from 17" to 20" to raise the gyro up 3" (for prop clearance after lowering the engine and prop).

Add new shock absorbers to the main landing gear.

Making all frame members out of "streamline" tubing to decrease drag.

Change the engine from the 80 hp 165# Verner to the 100 hp 134# Rotax 912S (less weight and more power).

Lower the thrust line 2.75" (it was 1.9" above the CG and now it will be .8" below it).

Increase the prop diameter from 65" to 67.5"

Add a muffler system - quieter.

Add a spinner to the prop - supposed to reduce drag even with a pusher.

Replace the 25' McCutchen rotor blades with my new 27' Sport Rotor.

It may be a long winter! But when I get back in the air I should have a lighter, more powerful, quieter, more stable, single place gyro with better lift and less drag. I can't wait to fly it after all the improvements are complete.

Ken,

While your dropping some cash to improve your gyro, I'd suggest you take the time to attend a Rotax 4-stroke seminar. I just returned from up around Lake Geneva, WI where I attended the Rotax 4-stroke seminar at Leading Edge Airfoils. LEAF was a great host. They gave a nice tour of their facilities and provided many tools for the seminar. Eric Tucker (www.rotaxflyingclub.com) was the seminar instructor. Check out his website for his seminar schedule. If you intend to do any significant repair and maintenance on your Rotax 4-stroke, this seminar is a must. I wouldn't be surprised to see more and more APs taking the course to gear up for impending LSA.

Hi John,
To shrink the photo, I used the Microsoft Photo editor. I open the picture up in the photo editor and then go to the tool bar and click on image. There should be an option to resize your photos there. Then you will have to hit 'save as" to save the photo to the new size. Let me know if that helps. It works for me anyway.

Thanks Todd,
Yes, I did say fun and paint in the same sentence. What I failed to mention is that I am not the one doing the actual paint job. My friend Rick Butterfield is the painter extraordinaire! He is used to doing custom Harley motorcycles, sport bikes, model air planes, fancy cars and trucks. This will be his first real custom aircraft paint job. He does excellent work! His excitement for aviation and this paint job has made it a lot of fun to work with him on this project. How many other custom painters do you know would allow me the customer and my son to help out on the prep work and be apart of the job? After talking to Rick, seeing his excitement for the job, and viewing some of his work, I knew he was the man for the job. He has a web site that is still under construction where you can view just a few of his custom paint jobs. The Magni is Greg Gremmingers and was not painted by Rick. http://www.ripcustoms.com

The look on his face scares me ! Who knows what kind of ideas he is coming up with now. I think the dust in the air is getting to him. ;)

Darren,

How's it coming, there must be some new pictures since last time?

Ken Rehler,

How about you? You had a long list of projects this winter, where are you at?

Hi Todd,

The weather is finally breaking to a temp that will be suitable to paint. It has been below zero at night for over a week here in Missouri. Not to mention all the rain, snow and ice. I hope to get some new pictures posted by tomorrow morning.

Thank you for all the nice comments! I wish I could take credit for the paint job.

Truth is even though I helped with all the prep work and sanding, I thought I better leave the painting to a professional.

My good friend Rick Butterfiled would be the person to call for body work, custom paint jobs... ect. He is really great at what he does. He does this as a hobby.

He mostly paints custom cars, trucks, Harleys, and sport bikes. This will be his first aircraft. I could not have picked a better painter for the job.

His excitement for aviation has really made this job a blast. I think the real pay off will be when he gets a ride in the gyro! He flies model air planes as a hobby, so the interest in aviation is there. He just needs to take the next step!

If he gets half as excited about flying in the gyro, as he did when I showed up at his front door with the unfinished gyro for him to paint, I know he will end up taking that next step.

As we all know, flying remote control airplanes and helicopters is cool stuff, but there is nothing better than flying itself.

You can check out some of Ricks other paint jobs on his website http://www.ripcustoms.com . His site is still under construction, so it just has a few of his custom paint jobs.

P.S In the gyro pictures above, the paint job is far from done! I think the finished job is going to be shocking!

Todd,

Yes, I am still working on my long list. I completed all the design work, fabricated the parts for the new landing gear, and assembled part of it. I need to complete the assemble of the gear and engine mount. Then I'll finally be ready to put on the new 912S engine.

It is taking me a lot longer to do the work than I had expected, as I have been helping my son remodel his house. Hope to get back to the gyro in about a week.

I ran into a new problem. The new engine turns the prop in the opposite direction so my Wonderluch prerotator now will need a new top double gear assemble to spin the blades the right direction.

That will be very nice. I wish that I had a little bit of flair in the artistic area, but afraid not!!!!

It's really coming along and looking great. What prop is that? It's mighty pretty. Are you certain you want to kill some bugs with it?

skyflea73
02-16-2004, 05:09 AM
Hi Chuck,

Not sure if its spelled Airplast or Arplast. Not worried about the bugs, I am just ready to start flying. It's been a long cold winter and I have spent way to much time on the ground. Looking at Tim's flying pictures is really making me jealous. The weather is supposed to get up in the 50's this week and I am thinking about blowing the dust off the power parachute just to get up in the air for a change.

Todd, can we re name this thread and slide it in the Magni section? The title is a little misleading....

It does look real good though. If I had that much money to put into a gyro, I think I would likely go the same route. It is a nice machine. What about insurance though???

We have a winner! We're talking Grand Champ here! Better take to it the shows & collect your trophys! Very nice.

I think my winter project was : how to turn a brand new single place into a whole lot of parts(2 place). It's getting there but so is the weather!

You don't lack a whole lot more, do you?

What engine do you have?

CLS447
02-29-2004, 05:35 PM
Thanks Chuck, I hope this isn't the first time you saw pictures of my progress. I try to keep the whole project posted under the Air Command thread.
Check it out!

Does everybody check out every new message on every thread like I do everyday on both forums or just the ones that interest you. Damn, everything about gyrocopters interest me.

BTW, that is my Joe Souza EA81 with his gear box , a 68inch warp drive with high torque AC prerotator, and a set of 28ft. SportCopter wide chord blades. CLT, tall tail, and extended range tanks. THIS IS MY BABY!!!

I am having the time of my life building this machine. To fly it will be a dream come true.

Me too Chris, I will gladly be your passenger! Just remind me to bring my ear plugs if your still running those short stack pipes!

Are you bringing it to Bensen Days?

CLS447

Ron,
I would love to come to Bensen Days, but it's just not in the cards this year!

Maybe ROC, it takes alot less fuel to get there. But only if you have a gyro by then. LOL

Do I understand well a combination of AC generator-motor ?
