I am considering the purchase of a used, "N" numbered gyro from another individual. It now dawns on me that I really have no idea what documents I should expect to receive or ask to receive along with the aircraft.
I suppose one starts with a Bill of Sale.
What else? What other documents should I get?
Airworthiness certificate?
Flight log?
Maintenance log?
Operating Limitations?
Building manual?
Build log?
Engine shop manual?
Component specific installation or instruction manuals? like for
avionics
rotors
propeller
rotor head
prerotator
Suggestions would be most welcome. I need to develop a list!

I don't know ether but if you are a member ( and possibly if not ) the AAOP web site tells just what is needed. RWE

For FAA 'N' numbered aircraft you need to fill out a transfer of ownership form.
Cannot remember the from number, but have copies at the airport and will look.
However I bet Jeff will provide it for you before that happens.
You also need a bill of sale and by registering it with the FAA you can expect a sales tax bill from most states.
That is really about all you need to transfer the sale. The rest of your list would be excellent to have however is not required but lack of logbooks will reduce the resale value.

You will also need the original registration (should be on the aircraft)
Make sure the bill of sale is filled out with all of the aircraft information, this is what slowed mine down and had to send it to the owner twice to get the required information on it.
I believe the bill of sale we used was a form that we got from the FAA.
And yes, as much of the other you can get really helps, don't need it for registration but is great to have as an owner.

Aircraft Bill of Sale "FAA form AC8050-2
www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/form/ac8050-2.pdf
Aircraft Registration form :ac8050-1
http://www.faa.gov/forms/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/185220 You must use the orignal form.
The sellers registration form. Make sure the back side is filled out showing who purchased the aircraft.
Highly recommend that all three pieces go in one envelope to Oklahoma City.

This might be in the "unlikely" department, but I always did a title search on every aircraft I purchased. I'd do the same if it was an Experimental. Liens can be placed on stuff from all kinds of odd sources. It'd be vacuous to find you just bought a machine that was chock full of IRS liens. The AOPA has a service listed on their website that is as good as any.
OK, so it is overkill for a gyro...unless it isn't for the one you are buying.

No not overkill at all I should have mentioned it Jon good one!
We always check for liens FIRST. We have found liens that the owner never even knew existed. They had been paid off but never unrecorded!!!
Good advice for sure Jon!!!
