Thats right folks, its time to get started on the 2005 t-shirt design. I would really like to have some type of cool cartoon. I only have one problem....no talent.

I need your help.

The Rotary Wing Forum T-Shirt Design Contest

Grand Prize:
2 Rotary Forum T-shirts with your winning design.

Please post or e-mail your entries to: admin@rotaryforum.com
Multiple entries are welcomed. C'mon people, show us your artistic talents. I've attached a couple pics of gyro cartoons along the lines I'm looking for.

The first one is Joe Heli's Bensen Monster, the other one is the logo for the Global Eagle. I'd like to see Joe's completed design with the smaller tires and blades flexing upwards.

Once completed the shirts will be available for sale here on the forum and also there will be some given away for promotions and events.

Please remember in your designs, there will be a limited number of colors...probably 3-4.

Are we going to do a front and back like last year?

I am working on a submission, I hope you can wait a day or two.

I'm waiting for more submissions. I plan to do front and back plus it will say 2005 on it somewhere since this is becoming an annual tradition.

Got to have a mailbox for an instrument panel.
I'll take two XL.

Happy New Year to everyone. I still have a running gun battle with this prostate cancer but if I felt ANY better I'd be chasing younger women -- then I'd have heart problems.
Hoping to get both Phoenix and Puff back into air this year --- plus do several weeks of volunteer work with JAARS in NC.

Steve,

Phil has printed all the shirts for the forum to date. He has been a tremendous help to me and given us a screamin' deal on the shirts.

I'm glad to see so many people are interested in shirts. Right now though I need design Ideas. I really, really like Jose's entries but lets have some competition. Don't let him win without a little fight. C'mon folks, put the pencil to paper.

I am sorry but I am not excited about the Hotwheels monster gyro on the current idea board. Why not a picture of someone flying by in a stable gyro?

If they do that we going to lose the couple of member that we have left. Ja! ja!

Todd - I agree with Ron - I also think the image should be a positive one to advertise the good (safe) and fun aspect of Gyros. Maybe a good picture of a single seat open frame (stable) gyro in flight would be good. The previous image sort of put me off a bit - showing a wrecked gyro didn't seem to be a good advertisement for the sport.

No judgement here - :) - just my 2 cents worth, (also) - Thanks -

How about a photo like the one on Ralph Taggart's site showing the gyro at sunset (or something similar)? http://taggart.glg.msu.edu/gyro/rb1.htm Something like that would be pretty neat. How about photo submissions Todd?

Brian Jackson

I must concur. There's no questioning the talent of whomever submitted the "HotWheels" entry; it's kinda cool actually. However, in my humble opinion it tends to cast a rather "comic" and amateurish light on an otherwise serious sport. Lord knows we've been trying to shed this cloak of aviation's comic relief since the '60s.

No disrespect to the artist. It's just not something I'd wear, only because of how gyroplanes are portrayed thereon. But that's just me.

Thanks,
Brian Jackson

Looks like most people want something a little more classy this time around.
Now that things are starting to calm down a little around the house I may be able to contribute a piece of art in a day or so. (Not that it's gonna be any good, but I'll give it a shot)

Todd, if you want me to print these shirts also, I'm still here.

Later, Phil

PS --- If anybody is having a flyin and wants shirts I will print yours also at cost. I don't have much money but I can contribute my time to help the gyro cause.

It would seem my contributions are of no value here. Sorry for wasting everyone’s time.

I did not realize anything less then the latest supermodel would be unacceptable and require impolite and in my opinion underserved remarks.

It would seem best for everyone if I kept to myself and just spend my time flying my gyro.

Tim O,

I am just guessing here, but I don't think anyone wants a picture of a female that they have no connection to, on a shirt.

nose art of the WWII era was cool .... but was just the imagination of a horny airman!

no comments were made cause no-one wanted to upset or insult you.

I think the pic is cool, and if she was my girl-friend, then hell yes .... I'd put her on the tail of my gyro ..... but....... I hope this helps calm your mood.

I feel that a shadow pic. of a gyro in flight with some sort of sunset for a background would be nice.

The first shirt was great because is shows what we all strive to avoid!

Now it's gonna be a little tougher to come up with a theme that fits everyone
yet does not make gyros look bad/dangerous......

I am working on a concept .......

I don't see it anymore but apparently the female in the pictures Tim posted was his Lisa. I didn't know that was who it was. I know I could not talk my wife into a picture like that, and just assumed Tim had dug up that picture off the internet somewhere.

I had my a post above that was supposed to be a attempt at being funny but it would have been very offensive if the Female in that pic saw the post. And again apparently That was Tims Lisa, and she did see my post, and now I am the bad guy x 10!!!

Lisa and Tim, SORRY. honestly, I would not have said that had I known it was not a random pic off the net. Tim I wish you would have let us know who was in the pic!

Sorry

If you're still waiting for a design,

This is the image we put on out Chapter 62 golf shirts.

I can ask the lady who did it to do a similar one for here if you want. Maybe a Dominator flying over the golden gate bridge, Statue of Liberty, Sing Sing, ... or other land mark.

If her image is chosen, I'll pay her for her time.

Todd, let me know gyro model and landmark, and I will ask her to do it.

Tim B, my mis-guided idea was to indeed replicate the nose art concept (at least that did come across) and spoof the 'Got Milk' ad campaign which has started up again. I was thinking that 'Got Rotors' would encompass both gyros and heli's and a pretty female would attract attention of even non-rotorcraft fans.

My post indicated it was a submission from Lisa and I, second misguided post indicated I spent $ on propeller beanies and I wanted some feedback.

Personally, I think with what we have submitted so far a front graphic of the 'hot wheels' gyro (pocket sized) and a back picture would make a good shirt.

Tim, again I screwed up for not paying better attention to a persons post. I missed the part about a submission from you and Lisa. I just clicked on and saw the picture and did not consider that was your Lisa. Sorry.

1. Landing gear is too close-coupled, and not triangulated
2. Twin Stabilators flapping because not enough servo area/counterbalance
3. Too much weight/drag below the thrust line
4. Raked mast connects too far forward of COG
5. Underpowered to hover for nectar recovery
6. Composite body has too much frontal plate area
7. Rotor head & control rods too light to be seen in photo
8. Dangerous maneuver: Blades too close to vine
9. Black rotor blades too difficult to see by GA aircraft
10. Fan on opposing flower-craft should be ducted

I would like to propose putting a rendered picture (just like the pictures that scott has posted here (looks "penciled in") of Chuck Irby flying his
Dominator..... a tribute to chuck and his machine. I saw a picture in the PRA mag of chuck standing by his machine (at the Bistrop flyin)

What do you think?

ToddP

Tim,

I miss Chuck and his contributions to this forum. However please consider at the next fly-in when you're wearing a shirt and telling someone how safe and fun this sport is. So who is that on your shirt?

ToddP
02-01-2005, 09:42 AM
Submissions-

I appreciate people sending pictures and such but I think we really need line art this year. We converted a picture last year and while I was happy with the results, I think we'll have a much better shirt if we stick to line art. So guys, get out the pen and paper. So far the only submission that fills the bill is Jose.

My 2 cents. We can have a futuristic pic but can not be seen as wild and crazy. We are constantly fighting to be recognized as profecional pilots. Any bad advertisement will haunt us for a long time.

AS for a female in the pic I dont mind that is what we need female pilots. So we are not consider a close group. WE are then consider a family.

Now as knowing who is in it could be good. But last month I was given a shirt with a lady in front of it. just the face and torso dress up. It was given to me by the police comissioner of the whole PR island. he just pass it over to me. I didnt knew who it was until a friend of mine read the name. Who is Tracy Lord?

any way lets start printing

Here's another idea. An ex of mine had a cool t-shirt that said Celebrate Diversity -- and had about 25 pictures of different handguns in a matrix.

I'm thinking we could do something similar with experimental rotary winged aircraft. We can probably get line drawings (a general arrangement thing) from the vendors, or photos from the members. It would let us show the range of rotorcraft:

Gyros (alphabetical order, note!):

Air & Space 18A
Air Command
Barnett
Bensen (ya gotta have a Ben)
Brock
CarterCopter
Dominator
Gyrobee
Magni (classes up the joint)
McCullough J-2
Pitcairn PCA-2
RAF
Sycamore
Sparrowhawk
SportCopter

Throw in some of the one offs (Ken Rehler's, Dick DeGraw's Gyrhino, etc) and you really have a nice collage. Same thing with helicopters or you could mix em up:

Helicycle
Hummingbird
Mosquito
Mini-500 (for the foolhardy)
Rotorway Exec
Rotorway Scorpion
Safari
Ultrasport

cheers
