Hi Guys
There are a few Dominators being built here at the moment and the side mounted exhaust mounting is causing a few headaches.
Would anyone out there have any pics of the way the exhaust is mounted on your Dominator
I would really appreciate any feedback on this
Thanks
Paddy

here is a picture of my exhaust. Another Dom in our hanger, built at the same time, has the exhaust turned up instead of down

Would anyone have pics of the muffler mounted up higher??

Paddy:
This pic may give you a clue as to the 'up' position.
Same pieces but everyone seems to have their own custom mount.
My mount is quite solid, but (possibly as a result) the muffler mount brackets fail after about 40 hours. Lots of vibration despite isolation bushings, the brackets fail at the bends.
I'm experimenting with different mounts.
But Mike has the 'crosswise' muffler mount which runs side to side.
It flops around but doesn't break, for what that's worth.

Thanks Larry
I'm looking at all the options to isolate the muffler and place it exactly the way you have it

I'll try to get some pictures of the brackets and pinpoint where mine fails.
The rubber mounts are important but insufficient.
I've now got an asbestos pad between the clamps that surround the muffler and the muffler itself.
They're relatively loose, allowing the muffler to move some.

Here's a pic with better detail of the muffler mount.
The failure points are the two 'U' shaped stainless brackets.
They fail in the bend as a result of vibration.
I've got some beefier pieces I'll try when these die.

Another option could be to use a different style muffler. The Sport Copter Vortex doesn't use the side mounted exhaust. Theirs bends down under the engine. My 503 exhaust on my KB-2 was like that also. I had a problem with the mount on the KB-2 being too stiff and it cracked the muffler at the elbow. After I had it fixed (and Jet-Hot coated) I used a trick I think Tom Milton suggested and hung the muffler from pieces of a snowmobile drive belt to give it some flex and it worked great.
Here's a photo of a Vortex and a photo of my belt mount on my KB-2.

I will get you a pic tomorrow. My original 503 had across the top like Larry, and I had a failure. Then I tried another variation hooking onto the exhaust bolts. I didn't like it, but I now have a mounting that I am very confident of and I will be flying in the morning so I will post some pics.

The clamps and barry mounts are part of a set that Lockwood aviation sells. The arms are welded angle iron with tabs on them. Hope this helps.

Ok here I go Paddy :)
I am at the point with my build where I just assembled my exhaust. Brackets are made to accommodate the radiator hose and having rubber grommets hold the muffler allowing it to shake and bake on top of the bracket and never break in a million years :) I guarantee that!!!!!! :) LOL It is coming from your Hungarian born American Gyro brother (who still thinks R22 sucks LOL sorry I couldn't help myself) Good luck with it. If you need specific measurements pm me :)

Tim Chick's post #8 is exactly the solution I was looking for. My MZ 202 exhaust is very similar to the sportcopter picture. It should work out well for my build. Thanks for posting the pictures.

I like Tim Chick's method as well.... any type of spec on the belt material that should be used?

My brother lives in Maine and sent me a used snowmobile belt. Maybe some of our northern forum members could rummage around and find a couple laying around for those who'd like to try that type of mount.

Thaks Guys
Thanks Gabor, Your solution for the muffler mount is using the crankcase holes that I would like to use.
Its all good information seeing how everybody came up with different solutions
Thanks
