Two dead in helicopter crash
May 28, 2011, at 16:38, Updated: May 28, 2011 at 17:31

Two men were killed on Saturday outside Norrtälje when a small helicopter, a gyrocopter, crashed and caught fire.

Shortly before 12:30 o'clock called two witnesses, independent of each other, to the SOS and alerted that a helicopter crashed at Snesslingby just south of Norrtälje.

- They saw the accident and had heard a coughing engine shortly before it was probably engine failure, "says Lars-Olof Göckert of the Air Rescue Centre.

A large räddningspådrag with a dozen firefighters and three helicopters were sent to the scene. The helicopter, a slight variant called gyrocopter or auto-gyro, were smashed total in the crash.

The article continues ...

- It burned really well in it and in the woods around it. Column of smoke visible from afar, "says Sten Johansson, staff officer at Södertörn rescue.

The fire was quickly extinguished. Technicians from the police was sent there to examine and photograph the wreckage.

The pilot was a 38-year-old man from Norrtälje who flew along with a 29-year-old man from Stockholm, Norrtälje state police. They probably died immediately in the crash.

The cause of the accident is unclear. Police headlining the event of a workplace accident because the pilot was working to fly passengers. In addition the police will KSAK to investigate what happened.

Thanks Karl, interesting site.
I guess it's hard to avoid flying over forest in Sweden.

Yes I agree, difficult to avoid the forest.

We have a similar issue here.
We operate from Langkawi, an island just off the coast of Malaysia.

Most of the island is covered in jungle and the island is so small that most of the operations including circuits are over the sea.

We have only found 2 locations where you can safely land a light aircraft off airport and we tested them both, one after a fuel pipe failure, lots of damage no injuries and one by a solo student after an engine failure, landed on the beach with no damage and no injuries.

When I dream of which gyro to build I always come back to G force style gear so I can do a stop and drop into the smaller spaces if required.

Not the safest place to fly but a great place to live and Guinness is duty free.
