BUTTERFLY GYROPLANE TEST FLIGHT REVIEW. By Geoff Jamieson

Recently Greg Mitchell (Mitch) completed building his Butterfly Gyroplane. Designed and manufactured in the USA by Larry Neal. Mitch has the Australian and New Zealand manufacturing and distribution rights. Mitch asked me to test fly his Butterfly.

I have been flying gyroplanes since 1973 and I am an ASRA Gyroplane Instructor. Over the years I have flown many types of gyros, however this was the first time flying a New Generation Centre Line Thrust (CLT) type craft. Without doubt, this is the best gyroplane I have ever flown.

I flew the Butterfly for approximately 20 mins, the craft was flying a little nose high, then landed and adjusted the trim spring and took off again. Magic! The Butterfly is a very responsive gyro, very light (two people can lift her onto a trailer, we did) and it can make very quick decisve manuvers using small quick stick imputs.

Take off run showed just how good the self castering front nose wheel and main suspension behaves even on a rough grass strip. At 6,500rpm and about 35 mph she lifted off and climbs quickly. Normal cruise is about 50 mph but she fly's very well at 40- 45 mph with the Rotax 503, 50 hp engine ticking over at 5,600rpm. This leaves plenty of horses to spare with a 6,800 rpm max. We were all surprised at how quiet it was, largely due to not having to perform at or near the top of the rpm range of the enigine. This will also reduce wear and tear on the Rotax and should afford a longer engine life. My dressed weight is 92-95 kgs and a 100 kg pilot would have no concerns with respect to being under powered in this craft. Butterfly is around 108 kgs empty weight.

When flying at normal cruise and holding the stick steady, add throttle the gyro will climb. When power is reduced the gyro will descend. If the power is cut back to idle the airspeed drops off and the nose comes down slowly to normal approach landing speed.

The second flight lasted 34 minutes and I was flying her hands off in 15 knot variable wind conditions. I put her through an extensive range of manuvers and was very impressed with the craft. There was no stick shake and no shudder, in fact this gyro had no bad habits. The 58" wide wheel base presented no problems and is handy because you can put this gyro on the back of a tray top utility. The seating position is good and blades can be patted up from the seat. Everything worked as it should and in fact exceeded my expectations.

Personally I believe Larry Neal has his finger on the pulse with this design and I told Mitch more than once how good a gyro this is. He has done an excellent job with the building of his Butterfly and should be proud of what he has achieved.

I'll say it again, this gyroplane performed superbly and it is with out doubt the Best Gyroplane I Have Ever Flown.

I haven't flown a circuit yet but have had her at 40 feet and dropped her in hard after getting her behind the power curve and all out of sorts. Nil damage. Hope to get some single seat glider time in tomorrow if conditions are suitable and then try some more balancing and hops.

Cheers,

Mitch.

Mitch,

Sounds fantastic. I hope you and Allan really enjoy your machines and you sell a bunch of them.

G'Day Rob,
Where are you now, home or some other exotic part of the planet? Hope you and yours are well. I'm sure we'll have a 'phat' time with our gyros. We are putting together another package now for another Aussie Monarch client right now and there will be a lot of blokes at Caboulture when Allan gets his Monarch up.

Today I soloed a single place gyro glider. First time ever in a glider. Man how much fun is that! Several good strip runs at 10-15 feet, (might of made 20 ft) it was blowin 10-20 kts variable, not always down the strip. The crosswind component varying and running at 15 - 30 degrees, as I'd drift with the side wind component, just bring her back to centreline, heck, might as well take her out to the left a little..ect, ect. Like I keep saying, way to much fun to be legal. My instructor was all thumbs up after the first run and it just got better. Next outing will be The Long Beach with glider and then back to My Butterfly.

Looking forward to hooking up again somewhere Rob, are you going to PRA or Oshkosh 2005, cause Elise and I are headed your way.

Best regards,

Mitch

Hi Greg
|I am back in Brasil in preparation for the Butterfly replications but only the Monarch and Golden are my target.
An ultralite in Brasil can go to 650 kg and the Monarch still ultralite I could be mistaken but if I read wrong even the Golden will be ultralite.
Good going on your project, next two months are going to be interesting.

I don't have the experience in other gyros to compare like Geoff does, but I have to agree with everything he says about the butterfly. My first circuit was sort of accidental. I was doing crow hops and didn't like the way I was coming down so I aborted the landing by adding full power and took it up, played around about 10 minutes to get the feel of it and then landed it uneventfully. It is very forgiving. One time in the first few hours of flight time, I was concentrating on landing at a certain spot and realized that I was at about 20 feet and 20 mph. A large application of throttle brought it down quite gently. Almost looked like I knew what I was doing.

Heron,
Good news my friend and so the morphing begins.
Alan,
Good to hear from you, have you been getting much flight time in?
Regards,
Mitch.

I am ready to go back to Texas to pick my Monarch up from Larry. He has been doing some more testing with the new G force landing gear and he really has it dialed in. This little machine fits perfect in every way when you first sit in it.

I just hope the weather in Georgia is going to be as flight friendly as it was in Texas during the winter. Looking forward to time in the Georgia Skys.

Chris, I got to fly it the other day and the new struts work as well if not slightly better than the expensive Carter Struts! Pretty sweet. I didn't drop it in too hard; only from 15 feet with no abrupt flare and no wind... since it's not mine! ;)

G'Day Fellas,
Hey Chris your Monarch looks great. Matt, you're having all the fun. I like the extended pedal set-up on Chris' Monarch, Man is this a versatile craft or what!!!
Best regards,
Mitch.

Where are the Pictures?
Larry sent me a couple and my guess is that is Chris´s Monarch, right?
With the new Butterfly tail and logo?
I was on TV yesterday on a 30 minutes interview, my friend Duda owns the station, fall out has been great, Monarch and Golden videos and we did voice over on a quick panoramic view since La Cieva, passing by Bensen and getting to Butterlfy and a hint of the future.
Cross you fingers because I am in cramps . . . . :D

Greg,
I am 6'2" and Larry and I played with the set up jus a little. It all fits so nice and i think it will be relaxing to fly. Matt is a natural pilot and really enjoys putting the machine to the test. Mitch, I am ready to come down to you neck of the woods to do some flying......

G'Day Chris
Mate,......Sweet looking gyro, amazing how just changing the colours of the decals, makes all the Monarchs look just that little bit different. I like the extended pedal set-up a lot. I'm making up a few sets of pedal tubes to suit, so we have that option. I called DAJ yesterday to find out his weight and height, just incase he wanted the extended leg position. (not required on this kit). I've heard from Larry that Matt is a 'good stick' and I know he has been a big help and good friend to Larry. I am so looking forward to 2005 PRA Convention and Oshkosh, we are planning our schedule now. Will be flying into West Coast (maybe Canada, British Columbia) then down to LA ot to Vegas, have to do the National parks thing. Not sure if we will do an air pass thing of drive in a camper, taking the route 66 and down to Larry's, before heading up to both conventions. From there we will head across to New York to fly home. I'd like to see some of the New England states, Appalachian Mountains and the like also. But for me it's really about the gyros and meeting up with Larry. Any suggestions from you local boys on how to deal this six week visit to your country would be greatfully received. It would be good to see you in OZ anytime Chris. Perhaps we will catch up at the PRA Convention if your headed that way.
Heron,
Ask Chris to post pics of his Monarch. Yes Orange type colour decals and new tail. Superb!!! Glad to hear your media promo went well. I wish you every success with your collaborative venture.
Regards,

Mitch.

Yes, We are getting settled in here. The weather has turned colder so it may be a good thing that I don' have the bird here at this time. I am looking at putting a 105 hp engine in the big white machine......

See Ya,
