13. B08 PVT
If an altimeter setting is not available before flight, to which altitude should the pilot adjust the altimeter?
A) The elevation of the nearest airport corrected to mean sea level.
B) The elevation of the departure area.
C) Pressure altitude corrected for nonstandard temperature.
This is a good one.
I am going to guess "B"

B - since you know what it should be reading anyway.

I got that on my PPL written. B
In practice I set my altimeter to "0" (AGL) and use my GPS for MSL.

I'm not exactly sure what answer A means, since airport elevations are always given in feet(meters)MSL. And, of course, the nearest airport could have a very different elevation from the one you're at.
If you used answer C, you would definitely be screwed up. Pressure altitude corrected for non-standard temperature is Density Altitude.
Jonathan,
You might want to check out http://www.faatest.com . I used their software along with the Gleim practice book to prepare for my written. The Gleim book is great for studying and the software is great for practicing. It even has the gyro specific questions.
