I have spent the last hour or so of flying time trying to track down an engine noise under full power that sounded just like a leaking exhaust manifold gasket on the No. one cylinder side, without success.
Today I was about to pull the exhaust system off for further examination, when I noticed a small damp spot on the floor under the motor. Following it back up to the top of the engine I found that it was leaking from the inlet manifold / cylinder gasket.
Of the three manifold bolts I found two loose and one striped.
I wonder!!! I then removed all four spark plugs to find three plugs a very good mixture colour and No. one plug as clean and white as a new plug?
So I tightened up the remaining two bolts put the plugs back in check the water level and took it for a circuit, NO NOISE !
So what I was hearing was number one cylinder trying to destroy it self by detonation due to the slightly weaker mixture.
It must have been leaking and affecting the mixture for some time because I have gained about one hundred and fifty revs. Only time will tell if the piston has suffered too much, but at the moment it sounds well and is pulling well.
Now for a helli coil job.
