Just saw this engine on ebay. GyroRon has been talking about someone needed to pick one of these engines up and modifying it to fit a gyro.

Wish I had the cash or I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

Ebay PWC Engine Rotax (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4503163032&category=56422)

185HP and 4 stroke whohoo!!!!

The only problem with the PWC engines is:
They do not have a water pump, the water is pumped from the jet drive unit. snowmobile has a water pump built in, like rotax.

The crankshaft is externally threaded, not tapered, like a snowmobile or ROTAX engine

PWC's have water cooled exhaust, and the ports in the heads must be welded shut to use a non water cooled pipe.

Other than coming up with a way to drive a waterpump and a gearbox, they are great engines, Anthony Spagnoletti built a beautiful air command with a Yamaha 700, BUT HE DID HAVE TO DO EXTENSIVE MODIFICATIONS to make the gearbox mount, water pumop and exhaust.

Scott are you sure the big 4 storke have water pipes?

I haven't seen any 4 stroke PWC engines, But most boats Inboards. and I.O. use water cooled exhaust, but they also use converted auto engines.

I would imagine that a purpose built engine would have the coolant passages similar to the 2 strokes.

After taking a good look at the engine on ebay, it looks like it has it's own cooling system, Hmmmm looks like it would be worth a good look!

OK brent get busy! I still want to know more about the BMW R-100 conversions. :)

I think that gyro took "Best of Show" or some other such award a couple of years ago at BD's. I think I have a couple of pics of that gyro at home, I'll try to remember to post some of them tonight. (Unless I get side tracked playing Halo 2 again)

Scott the BMW is just like a EA81. Just mount the plate to the bell and your good. I had a 2SI box on it and the motor ready to fly was 150 pound. That would have 60 to 70 HP max. It would be best in a light single place tractor.

Hello Brent,

Absolutely good for single seater tractor, but no no for two seater. The newer engine with overhead cams is also a very poor performer for two seaters.
I know a few two seaters with the latest engines with 110 hp on the paper.
The prop shows more something like 80 hp.

Looks like the four cylinder is a Artic cat engine - Artic cat uses Suzuki engines, but now suzuki is partners with Kawasaki and my best guess is this engine is truely a Kawasaki Product.

the little inline two cylinder is a Polaris. Most likely very small displacement and tuned for alot of power, might not last long in a heavy duty application like a aircraft engine

the V twin is a Rotax. that is all I know about that. It is likely a bigger displacement engine, possibly close to 1000cc.

I do know that all the four stroke Jet Ski engines have a closed cooling system and are designed to run under high loads for long periods of time. I would think the sled engines aren't as tough. It would probably be easier to convert a sled engine though. 5 or so years from now will be interesting times as more and more of these engines are made availble on the used market. The little polaris engine would probably make a great gyrobee type engine.

Exactly right Ron, the polaris is 43 hp.
The rotax is a 1000cc V-twin.

Very interesting posibilities for sure!

I had just dusted off my crystal ball!

What is the V twin rated at? I am suprised that is all Polaris decided to squeeze out of that little two banger. Their jet ski engines are only 750cc twins and pumping out over 120 horsepower. For course they just shut down their watercraft division.....
