View Full Version : Play in the prop

Last night I replaced the two bearings in the redrive. It had some back and forth play as I wiggled the prop with my fingers. Minor play. More than the other machines in Dofin's hangar. So he suggested the bearings. I got everything back together and there is still some back and forth play. Do you have any ideas? *Nothing else seemed overly worn. Where else could I tighten or shim something in the prop or redrive to test? *Everything seems to be mounted solid and it's so slight that it's hard to tell where it's coming from. Thanks
Brian,
I had the same thing happen with my prop. Replaced the bearings, and about 10 hours later, the wiggle was back.
It's been about 40 hours since I had the prop hub surface knurled, and everything is still tight. May have a real issue when I need to replace the bearings again, but I know Steve O. had at least 400 hours on his bearings, so it should be a while before I have to deal with replacing the bearings.

Brian,
It sounds like the outer diameter bearing fit might be slightly worn. If it gets worse, you might take it to a machine shop and have them measure it and tell you what the clearance is, and what it should be. My guess is about .0005'' to .001'' clearance between the bearing and the housing. If I remember right, I had to warm sheave up to slide the bearings in on mine.
For a simple test, I would remove the prop and belts. Then I would use a dial indicator on the outer edge of the sheave and move it back and forth to see how much it's actually moving. The bearings need to have some clearance inside, so expect to see some movement. Anymore than about .005'' on the outer edge would probably warrant more investigation.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys this is some good info to start with. I'll discuss with Dofin more as well and get some measurements.

OK I'm back with the latest and greatest! I've determined that the jackshaft is worn. The bearings and tooth sprocket are solid but there is play in the center shaft. Eben can send me a new one and I suppose I can press it into the concentric plate. Anyone ever had this off before? Possible to have one machined? I haven't looked to closely at it to determined how much of a pain in the ass it will be to seperate the shaft from the concentric because of lack of time today. RAFSA sells the jackshaft and concentric plate seperately so this must be possible. Waiting on a reply from Eben as well.
