View Full Version : Gryos Flying the Pattern
Hi All,
A couple of weeks ago Greg Gremminger was on the Powered Sport Flying Radio Show talking about flying the pattern. He talks about the special considerations gyro pilots have to keep in mind when mixing with GA traffic.
You can get to the audio a bunch of different ways, including this link: http://www.psfmagazine.com/2010/12/greg-gremminger-magni-usa-112310/
Best regards,
Roy

Roy thank you.
Always great to hear Mr Gremminger educating.

This was very educational for me because it gave me some ideas of ideal radio traffic in the pattern. Having no aviation background, I want to learn more radio traffic: what other pilots want to hear from me, what's required, what's annoying, etc. Are there any other resources that teach radio?

Willisbr, just remember the following of what pilots/ATC wants to hear....
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++
This would be a typical ATC initial conversation
(who are you? ): "Long Beach Tower Experimental gyro 86 Sierra Hotel......
(where are you?): 3 miles southwest of the airport over the Queen Mary(remember that ship?) at 500 feet .....
(what do you want to do?): Inbound with information Mike for landing (or if a specific location is requested "at .....")
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++
At a airport with no control tower it is almost the same....
(who are you?) "Bermuda Dunes traffic, gyro 86SH.....
(where are you?) three miles to the west of the airport along Interstate 10 at 800 feet....
(what do you want to do?) landing straight in runway 28 full stop mid field(or where ever)"
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++
It is as simple as always remembering who-what-where. Some pilots skip some of the above information to either ATC or other pilots at uncontrolled fields. If you have any doubt where another aircraft is that can't see , always ask, or announce that you do not see them . Saying you are 2 miles west of the field is great, but without announcing your altitude you leave ATC/or other pilots wondering if you are a conflict risk or passing by 1000 feet above.
================================================== ===
Another example to a Class B airport conversation:
PILOT:"Los Angeles helicopter(119.8 separate helicopter frequency), 79 Lima Romeo 1 mile northeast of the field at 1200 inbound with information Quebec landing at the 401 parking structure"
ATC: "Helicopter 79LR, Los Angeles Tower, you are cleared to enter Class B airspace, remain at or above 1500 feet while crossing runway 24 right and left southbound midfield until over the parking structure and descend while remaining clear of the runways"
PILOT:"Los Angeles helicopter 79LR climbing to 1500 and remaining midfield, southbound until over the parking structure."
With the above minimal conversation, you have just said everything necessary to land a helicopter on top of the #4 car parking structure at LAX,one of the most congested airports in the world, and the busiest heliport in Los Angeles.... it really is that easy. The flying is another thing....

"all this from memory btw" when you have to speak your tail number on the radio!

Interesting idea.
I would be willing to give a 2-hour webinar on this topic to PRA members if there is enough interest.

I know phonetics. I was in the Army for 8 years. I would get a lot of education from a webinar about working with ATC, ground, and general traffic. With special attention to gyroplanes.

yep.
I will bring it up to the PRA Board.
We have the new online ground school starting in January so we might hold this in February after the ground school is up and running.
Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement.
