Nice 1969 Mach-1.
Who owns the mustang?
I see the AAI white gyro is now running with a 2.5 on it.

Great photos! Was this a PR event at the Groen Brothers Aviation headquarters in Salt Lake City?

There are photos from a PR event in Skypark Utah and a PR event at Spannish Fork Utah as well as other misc photos. The mustang was just a visitor.

The white gyro that you see is Jim Mayfield personal gyro. But you are right that is a 2.5. The white gyro at AAI 4123R is also running a 2.5 and we hope to have that same type of engine on ours soon.

Michael,

Have you guys been doing the stratus grind on the 2.5's?
I have an AAI/RAF and am going to swap out the 2.2 for a 2.5 sometime in the next few months. Don Parham said with the stratus grind in should be about 190 hp which should really solve the problem for those of us in Colorado and Utah.

No cam grinds on the AAI gyros. 190 would be nice. I am not sure the PSRU is built for that much HP. If you only fly at the higher altitudes or restrict power at the lowere altidues I hope it would be fine.

Do you have a good source for the engine?

Michael,

I will definately check with Jim and Joop to see that the redrive and belt can handle 190 hp before I do anything.
Maybe just run at lower rpm at lower altitude and only use full power when altitude is depriving you of some horses.

I spoke with David Eiland in Fla who put a 2.5 in his machine - he gave me the website of www.car-part.com which has dozens and dozens of engines listed. Highest price was about $2800 for one with only 5,000 miles and they went down from there.

If you do a cam grind on the EJ25 you need to replace the stock belt with a GT2 version which will handle 70% more Hp. The unofficial word from a Gates engineer is that the 85 mm wide GT2 belt will handle 270 Hp at 5500 rpm.

Ask Brad King about the performance increase---he is flying an EJ25 with the Stratus grind on his Mad Max II, although he is using an NHC gear drive.

I switched to the Gates GT2 awhile back, and when I changed it out for a new one after a couple hundred hours, I could hardly tell the old one from the new one. No signs of wear and tear at all. It's an awesome belt and I'd suggest that anyone still running a Jason, switch over. I had all the teeth shear off a Jason on take-off once with a passenger in the right seat. We were about 75 feet off the ground. Of course my superb piloting skills got us down safely. :D Per Gates, those belts should be run very tightly. Banjo-string tight is the term I believe I heard. That's how I set mine up and have had no problems at all with it.
