View Full Version : Motorcycle fuel injection systems
OK ! looking for guys with experience and knowledge of motorcycle fuel injection systems. Ultimate objective is to see if a good basic motorcycle fuel injection system could readily be adapted to the MPE Weber 750 engine, a two cylinder four stroke engine, that cranks up around 8k.
Interested in stock or after market, trying to beat the OEM cost of the ECU and harness at about $1400 for the Weber with the Walbro system.
I know there are some real certified cycle junkies out there that have got to have a wealth of info. I am almost 98 percent stupid on fuel injection so let's hear it.
Tony
PS. gals can chime it also, of course

Best option, TuneBoy software and cables;
http://www.tuneboy.com.au/
software including cable is USD 240.00 , which has a USB plugin connection to any windows laptop (95 onwards) can log from the laptop and has full control over every aspect of the ECU. Maps are free and downloadable from there website, and software updates come free as best i know.
Thanks

You could look at a megesguirt ECU. I have one on my EA81 turbo. It will run any engine.
The price is good and the software is free. Mine has been totally reliable so far.

HI Roy
some questions, did you buy yours assembled or did you make it, the price , the difficulty of installation and do you feel it was worth the time and costs.
Thanks for the reply

I built it up from the kit. Very good instructions.
The main reason for it was the ease of wiring. Simple compared to reverse engineering a factory wiring loom.
You can get one pre built from some suppliers and even on ebay.
There was a bit of a learning curve but very satisfing.
I am an electrician for a living so that helps.

HI Roy
Thanks for the reply, was into electronics myself, so there would be no problem. looked up the "Megasquirt" you mentioned and noticed they now have a "Minisquirt" version that is much smaller and maybe more simple ? have you heard of anyone using this one and the results. It appears to be pre-wired, looks like this would costs around $400 to $500 total , that beats $1400. Already have the throttle bodies, injectors would need sensors yet and factory style connectors for same.
Thanks again for the info
Tony
Roy , that "Megasquirt" looks like it would run ANY Subaru with a lot less headaches than the original system ??
Tony
Well looks like I can answer a lot of my own questions about after market fuel injection, (with the help of panda nzzz).
Started our at the "Megasquirt" web site and quickly move to there recommended "microsquirt" page as it was recommend for motorcycles and the Microsquirt is sold assembled where the Megasquirt can be bought as a assembled unit or a assemble it yourself kit. The Micro squirt unit is appx 3 and 3/4 inch square by 1 and 3/4 inch thick and in a seal weather proof case but has all the heat generating parts like Map, injector drivers and ignition drivers in other cases. It comes with a 3 foot wiring harness with the connector for the ECU pre-wired (you wire the engine connectors) this unit is $400 plus the censors you might need and some other misc. parts would bring it to about 5 to 6 hundred dollars, less than half the costs of the factory harness and ECU.
The consumer replies are great and there are a bunch of forums and support sites for more information than you can imagine.
After reading so much my head is swimming I think this will be my choice for the MPE-750 Weber.
The Megasquirt looks like the way to go on ANY SUBARU , the Microsquirt might work on the EA-81 and 82.
Once installed the ECU can be tuned to a fine hair for desired performance.
Unless I find out otherwise from my Weber contact, this will be my choice of EFI

The megasquirt will run any fuel injected engine. My brother is putting one on a DeTomaso Pantera (Car)
My neighbor wants me to put one on his jet boat.
If you are setting up a turbo engine you really need a wide band o2 sensor. In fact it would be useful for any engine tuning.
The megasquirt and software is all open source so if you have problems there are heaps of people around who can help.
I bought their temperature sensors to make setting up easier.
There is also an option for an altitude compensating map sensor but it seems there is no real need to worry about that.
I will take some pictures of my setup and post them over the weekend.

As you can see I put the whole thing in a box to keep it out of the weather with a clear lit for pre flights.
The box is rubber mounted off the frame.

That sure looks like a neat installation. Did you get any idea of what that typical package weighed ?? The Microsquirt comes with a wiring harness with open ends for the engine connectors and is about 3 feet long, plenty for a pusher installation if it is open frame. With a pod or cabin you would probably need to extend about 10 or 12 wires

The Megasquirt is light. 1 or 2 pounds. My set up with the box, rubber mounts etc would weigh a fair bit more. My whole Gyro is rather over built but with the EA81T It performs well with my heavy ass.
Roy
Well, joined the Microsquirt forum, and posted a question about the probability of using the Microsquirt EFI/ECU on the Weber MPE-750, and got enough info back to fill a wheelbarow. Now all I have to do is take and advanced course in computer programming and grammer and it will be a breeze.
