I can't make out what happend. He seemed to get away from the cliff ok.

scratch that.. if this witness is credible anyway..

According to information from Lt. Marvin Morton of the sheriff's office, the helicopter hit the ground and then gained enough air to go across the lake, over the tops of people sitting on the beach along the dam, and landed in the brush along Angel Creek next to a campground outhouse.

Sounds like you can hear him hitting stuff when pulling out from his dive off the cliff.

Looks to me like he either got carried away with the dive off the cliff & couldn't quite clear something when he's out of sight, or he just didn't see something & flew into it (but he sure is low there).

When he comes back into view he's already hit something & we're just seeing the aftermath.

Well hot dogging will get you sooner or later. He is hovering out of ground effect. Picks up an extra 200 lbs. Hesitates for a few seconds while the guy straps in. Then the pilot does a right pedal dive turn which is completely not necessary, but it sure makes one's stomach rise. If you listen to the sound of the blades barking you know he was over torquing the machine. He had the collective bruising his armpit. He could not recover from the dive. He was falling so rapidly vertically with no forward speed there was no way of recovering. A straight pedal turn and gradual speed build up would have been the choice of taking off..... IMHO of course :)

Flyn into one of the batic winds will do that, no matter how much power you think youv got.

Like Gabor says, too much collective, the blades had near stopped wen it touched the ground.

One of our local pilots had a lucky break the other day. They were doing a photo flight in a Bell 206 B around 3 miles off shore in Lake Michigan. The pilot said he got into a settling with power situation and splashed down in the lake.
The amazing part, the chin bubble broke and water came all the way into the back seats.... BUT he was able to pull it out of the water and fly it to shore. It's getting an "overtorque" inspection as we speak.

This bloke definatly 'over torqued' this one.

Musta had sum serious pitch in them blades to slow um that fast, then start to rotate coz the TR lost too much rpm. :(

I own one of those helicopters, and I am still trying to figure out what possessed him to make a turn like that and do what he did. I have watched it several times and from another camara source on the internet. What you saw was actually the second crash. He hit the ground behind the trees, came back up, and must have had no/idle engine power, just airspeed and VERY LOW rotorspeed quickly from climbing excessively. Under those circumstances, the landing was not going to be pretty, and it was not. All considered, they were very lucky to walk away. LongRangers are pretty tuff airframes.

Yes Scott they can take some serious abuse for sure. I too would like to see if from another angle since I was only guessing from the noises what really went down. Just for the analytical point of view it is always better to see something from a couple of angles. This one was a very amateur clip and not too telling for that matter.
