I found a cable on a drilling rig used for the autodriller that maybe the best solution for a pre-rotator cable. It can bend more than 90 degrees, has bearings on both ends, a small port to add lubrication, able to run 24/7 for months at a time. It is a braided cable and not sure it could handle the high RPM.
This guy can build anything. It would be worth a call for the creative guys

I bet it can handle the RPM and torque...looks like pretty good size motor running it as well.

The motor running it is a detroit. The picture is the autodriller that lifts the brake handle on the draw works. Someone smarter than I needs to call him as this guy can build anything and all the cables are custom. It is a small calbe for what it does.

Looks like a regular flex cable. There is company that makes them with different ends, but they only wholesale. Schuyler or something like that. they make the ones that McCarr sells. But we do need something. I have had a call in to Tom with no results. Any one have a 54 in CC flex shaft lying around?
Mark,
Email Tom, he just doesn't do phone calls, for some reason. I've always had good luck emailing him, and no luck calling him.

I did email him,
We spoke about a week ago and he was having problems with his computer. He said he had not got my email. I hope he is not sick again.
Thanks for the tip. I will try a few more days.

Hi Mark,
I have had your flex shaft assy ready for a week or so. I also have the upper unit direct drive ready, but will be a few more days on the extra W006 Braces that you wanted (as I told you on the phone).
I am not in the office very long these days. I have been spending 12 hour days in the shop (not complaining) the backlog of orders is getting filled and i anticipate getting caught up within the next two weeks (except for the two, one-of a-kind items I have to fabricate for two customers)
My health issues are fairly well over. Last Wednesday, the Doc said I could loose the 4 layer compression bandages on my leg and switch to a support stocking...... yipee !

Friday should be no problem. Lost a day yesterday, my semi-annual butt kickin' sciatica back ache. I can't win.

Wunderlich's made the flex shaft assembly for RAF & GBA, until RAF decided to make their own. Neither assembly has bearings in the end.
I still make replacement flex shaft assemblies for RAF & GBA and shorten shafts that are too long.

Actually, it started when I was replacing the control column on an Ercoupe about 30 years ago. Dibilitating, drop-to-the-floor pain.

Tom- As a horseshoer I suffered from sciatica for many years until I stumbled upon the cure. This info will cure you and you can pass this happily on to others who will think your the greatest!
Sciatica is one of the few back problems you can cure yourself. It is really a muscle imbalance and the secret is a program of low impact stretching sort of like a yoga routine.
If your pain is such where you can't even put on your own socks start out on the floor with some simple leg lifts, gentle trunk twists,do this while laying on your back, alternating crossing your legs leading up to some cat stretching.
The most important part is to continue for ten min. set your clock, time will drag on, when I first tried this I thought this is stupid I've got real pain! How are these simple stretches supposed to HELP.
As soon as you read this get down on the floor and start. If you can do two sessions a day that's twice as good. after ONE DAY the pain was 50% Gone on day two I was almost cured and on Day 3, I was unable to remember which leg the pain was in.
TRY IT-
Now if I can only get my gyro DONE!

Steve,
I went to a Sports medicine therapist last week. I had a pinched nerve going down one of my legs. I was amazed how much better I felt afterwards. Like you said, he fixed it with some different stretching techniques.

I too suffered from sciatica. It was terribly painful and the pain was only partially relieved by pain meds. I finally went to a chiropractor, and he referred me to a yoga instructor.
She taught me 6 different stretching exercises which I do each morning. It worked so good that I convinced myself i was "cured" and didn't need to do them. That was a bad idea.
I am now back in the routine of doing them each morning before my shower and the relief i get is nearly perfect.

After reading all these replies , I had to call my father immediately. He suffers with this pain.
I hope he listens & starts doing some stretching excercises ! The docs sure ain't helping him ! He's 73.

Chris,
All he needs is to go to someone one time so they can show him the stretching exercises that will help.

One of the best known flexible power transmission cable mfr's is (or was) SMITH, also known as HH Smith. The flap and slat drive systems on the Canadair RJ (regional jet) among others (Astra Jet, Falcon, etc) use them. Smith would provide, for the asking, a really nice design book (3 ring binder) that would answer your torque, speed, longevity questions.
If you can't find HH Smith on the internet, find out who makes the flex drive cables between the linear actuators for the above aircraft.
From what I know, they can transmit power but only for intermittent spurts, since the cable runs in a teflon/graphite lined tube which is wrapped (woven) within a steel or statinless steel braid.
Most ends were some type of a swaged on hex end about 1-2 inches long.
Hope this helps.

One last comment about the cure. It doesn't really matter what type of stretching routine you do as long as it lasts at least 10 min.!
Most people feel most comfortable on their backs because by the time they resort to this they are almost crippled by the pain. Just move your body equally on both sides.
I've been driving truck lately for a local fish processor to the Oregon boarder {a easy 12 hr. round trip} and had a mystery weakness in my back that I was sure was something new and of course SERIOUS PAIN.
With my wonderful wife's urging to try the Sciatica cure, even if I new for sure that this was not the same type of pain, Guess What! It WORKS!!!
